Chapter 1 - The Girl in JeansSix hours earlier, Maya Ellison stood in front of a cracked mirror in a small apartment above a closed bakery.

On the bed behind her lay three outfits.
The first was a black suit sent by a luxury stylist. The second was a cream dress chosen by a public relations team. The third was what she had already decided to wear: a white shirt, blue jeans, and sneakers.
Her lawyer, Daniel Reed, stood near the door holding a garment bag like it was evidence in court.
“Maya,” he said carefully, “the board expects a formal introduction.”
Maya tied her hair into a ponytail. “The board expects many things.”
“They also expect the new owner to make a strong first impression.”
She turned to him. “That’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Daniel sighed. He had worked with billionaires, heirs, founders, and difficult executives. But Maya Ellison was different. She was twenty-six, quiet, stubborn, and impossible to pressure once she made up her mind.
At midnight, her private investment group had completed the purchase of Harrington Global Financial. The deal had been hidden for months behind shell companies, silent negotiations, and sealed documents. By sunrise, she owned the corporation that had once destroyed her mother’s business.
But nobody in the building knew her face.
That was intentional.
Maya picked up her backpack from the chair. Inside were three folders, one old photograph, a laptop, and a stack of documents that could end several careers before lunch.
Daniel noticed the backpack and frowned. “You’re really bringing that?”
“Yes.”
“You know they’ll judge you.”
Maya looked at the old photograph on the desk.
In it, her mother stood outside a tiny office with a hand-painted sign that read Ellison Community Lending. She was smiling, proud and hopeful, unaware that years later a powerful financial corporation would crush everything she built.
Maya placed the photograph inside the front pocket of the backpack.
“That’s the point,” she said.
Daniel went quiet.
Maya checked her watch. “The board meeting starts at nine.”
“And the chairman knows you’re coming?”
“Samuel Grant knows.”
“Security?”
“He said he would alert the executive floor only.”
Daniel studied her. “You want to see what happens before anyone protects you.”
May you like
Maya zipped the backpack.
“I want to see who they are when they think nobody important is watching.”
