Chapter 6 - The Elevator Nobody Wanted to OpenAfter the radio call, nobody moved.

Blake stood with his hand still gripping the radio. His lips parted, but his voice had abandoned him. The receptionist stared at her screen. Employees who had been watching suddenly pretended they had not.

Maya stepped past Blake and picked up the access card.

There was a faint scratch across the silver stripe.

She ran her thumb over it once.

Blake finally found words. “Miss Ellison, I—I didn’t know—”

“That was clear.”

“I was following security procedures.”

“No,” Maya said. “You were following your assumptions.”

The private elevator at the far side of the lobby opened with a soft chime.

Two executive assistants stepped out. Behind them came Daniel Reed, moving quickly across the marble floor.

“Maya,” he said, stopping beside her. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine.”

He looked at the card in her hand, then at Blake.

Blake swallowed hard. “Mr. Reed, this is a misunderstanding.”

Daniel’s expression remained professional. “It looked very clear from upstairs.”

Maya turned to the receptionist. “What’s your name?”

The young woman blinked. “Nora, ma’am.”

“Did my appointment appear in the system?”

Nora hesitated, then nodded. “Yes. It was marked private executive access.”

“Thank you.”

Nora looked down, ashamed. “I should have said more.”

Maya’s voice softened. “You should have felt safe enough to.”

That sentence struck harder than anger.

Maya turned toward Elena, who still stood near the desk. “And your name?”

“Elena Ruiz.”

“You tried to help.”

Elena nodded uncertainly. “I tried.”

“I noticed.”

Blake shifted. “Miss Ellison, I sincerely apologize.”

Maya looked at him.

“You don’t need to apologize to me first.”

Blake frowned.

Maya pointed toward Nora. Then Elena. Then the security guard near the door who had watched silently.

“You need to apologize to every person in this lobby you trained to stay quiet.”

No one breathed.

May you like

Then Maya walked toward the private elevator.

This time, nobody blocked her path.
