Chapter 12 - The Elevator Opens DownwardMaya could have left through the private garage.

Instead, she returned to the lobby.
By then, Blake’s nameplate had been removed from the front desk area. Security staff stood straighter than before, though not proudly. Nervously.
Nora saw Maya approaching and stood quickly.
“Ms. Ellison.”
“Maya is fine.”
Nora looked startled. “I’m sorry about this morning.”
“You said that already.”
“I know, but I keep thinking I should have done more.”
Maya rested a hand on the desk. “Then do more next time.”
Nora nodded, eyes shining.
Elena Ruiz arrived from the elevators holding a notebook, still stunned by her temporary assignment.
“I was told to report to the transition office,” Elena said.
“You were told correctly.”
“I’m not sure I’m qualified.”
Maya smiled. “Good. People who are too sure of themselves built the problem.”
Elena laughed nervously.
Maya turned toward the security guards. “Everyone working lobby access will attend new training. But training alone is not enough. Starting today, any staff member can escalate mistreatment directly to the transition team without manager approval.”
One guard raised his hand slightly. “Ma’am, what about difficult visitors?”
“Security still matters,” Maya said. “But dignity is not a security risk.”
The sentence traveled through the lobby.
Near the seating area, an older janitor named Mr. Alvarez stood with his cart. He had worked in the building for twelve years and had been ignored for nearly all of them.
Maya walked toward him.
“Good afternoon,” she said.
Mr. Alvarez looked behind him, thinking she meant someone else.
Then he smiled slowly. “Good afternoon, ma’am.”
“What’s the hardest door in this building to get through?”
He did not hesitate. “The one people close with their eyes.”
Maya held his gaze.
“That changes today.”
For the first time, a few employees began to clap.
It started quietly.
Then it spread.

Not loud enough to become a celebration.
Just loud enough to become permission.
