Chapter 3 - The General Manager's Fall

Richard Sterling looked at the man in the faded leather jacket. For three full seconds, his brain struggled to bridge the gap between the legendary, ruthless titan of industry who built Vance Hospitality Group and the disheveled traveler standing six feet away from him.
Then, Sterling’s gaze fell upon the golden signet ring on Ethan’s right pinky finger—an heirloom passed down from Ethan’s grandfather, etched with the family crest that doubled as the corporate logo of the Grand Regent chain.
Sterling’s breath hitched in his chest. His posture collapsed instantly, his shoulders hunching as if a crushing weight had been dropped onto him.
"Mr... Mr. Vance?" Sterling gasped, taking an instinctive step back. "Sir! I... we weren't expecting you until tomorrow morning! The executive suite was being prepped for your formal arrival!"
"I can see that," Ethan replied smoothly, his tone icy enough to freeze water. "It was being prepped so thoroughly that your staff tried to send me and my daughter to a roadside motel."
Sterling turned a furious, terrified glare toward Patricia and Karla. "What is the meaning of this?! Why wasn't Mr. Vance checked in instantly?!"
"Richard," Ethan cut him off, stopping the manager in his tracks. "Don't shift the blame. A building reflects its architect. Patricia and Karla didn't learn to treat guests with cold contempt on their own. They learned it from you."
"Sir, that is entirely untrue!" Sterling pleaded, sweating profusely under his stiff collar. "I run a five-star establishment! We maintain the highest standards of hospitality in the city!"
"Hospitality?" Ethan echoed softly. He pointed to Lupita, who was still standing near the luggage carts, holding the glass vase with trembling hands. "That woman over there—Lupita—is the only person in this lobby who practiced hospitality tonight. She didn't know who I was. She saw a tired father and a sleeping girl, and she offered help. Meanwhile, your front-desk staff mocked her for having basic compassion."
"I... I will address their conduct immediately, sir!" Sterling stammered, pulling a silk handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his drenched forehead. "Karla, Patricia—you are both suspended pending an internal review!"
"No," Ethan said. "They aren't suspended."
Karla let out a faint, hopeful breath.
"They are terminated," Ethan corrected firmly. "Effective immediately. And so are you, Richard."
Sterling froze, his eyes widening in complete horror. "Mr. Vance! You can't fire me! I’ve managed this property for six years! We’ve brought in record profits!"
"You managed a building, Richard. You destroyed its soul," Ethan said calmly. "Profit without empathy is worthless to me. Pack your personal belongings from your office. You have thirty minutes to clear the premises before security escorts you out."
"You can't do this over a simple misunderstanding!" Sterling yelled, his composure completely shattering into desperate rage. "I have a contract!"
"Which includes a morality and brand reputation clause that I personally wrote," Ethan countered. "If you argue further, I will instruct corporate legal to audit your expense accounts for the last three fiscal years. Would you prefer that?"
Sterling’s jaw snapped shut. He looked down at the polished marble floor, his face red with humiliation, completely undone. Without another word, he turned on his heel and walked rapidly toward the administrative offices, his head hung low.
Karla was silently weeping, clutching her hands together, while Patricia stared at the floor in stunned, numb acceptance of her fate.
Ethan ignored them. He turned his attention to Lupita, walking gently over to where the housekeeper stood.
"Lupita," Ethan said warmly.
"Yes, Mr. Vance?" she whispered, her voice filled with awe and uncertainty.

"Would you mind helping me carry these roses up to Suite 904?" Ethan asked softly. "My arms are a bit full."
A tear slipped down Lupita’s cheek, but a soft, beautiful smile broke across her face. "It would be my honor, sir."
