Chapter 9 - A Morning of Gold

The next morning, the sun broke over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, warm golden light across the city of Chicago.

Ethan woke up early. He stood by the window, watching the morning fog roll off the water, feeling a strange, unfamiliar sensation in his chest.

It was peace.

A soft rustle came from the bed behind him.

Ethan turned around. Little Lily was sitting up in the middle of the large bed, rubbing her eyes with her tiny fists, her messy brown hair sticking up in all directions.

"Daddy?" she murmured, her voice sleepy and sweet.

"Good morning, my sweet girl," Ethan smiled, walking over and sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Lily looked around the grand room, her eyes widening in wonder at the tall windows, the fancy furniture, and the bright morning sunlight. "Where are we? Are we in a castle?"

Ethan chuckled softly, pulling her onto his lap and wrapping his arms around her. "Something like that, baby. We’re in a place where people are going to be taken care of."

Lily’s eyes drifted over to the side table, landing on the crystal vase holding the vibrant red roses. She gasped softly, pointing her little finger.

"Mommy's flowers!" she cheered.

"Yes, sweetheart," Ethan whispered, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Mommy's flowers."

Lily reached out, taking one of the fallen red petals from the table, holding it gently between her small fingers. She looked up at Ethan with her deep, soulful brown eyes—the exact same eyes her mother had possessed.

"Daddy," Lily said softly. "I had a dream last night."

"You did? What was it about?"

"I dreamed about Mommy," Lily said, her little voice entirely calm and happy. "She was wearing her yellow dress, standing in a big garden. She told me to tell you that she loves the roses. And she said... she said you don't have to be sad anymore, because she’s always right here."

Lily pressed her tiny palm against Ethan’s chest, right over his heart.

Ethan swallowed hard, tears welling in his eyes. But for the first time in three years, they were not tears of crushing despair. They were tears of healing, release, and profound gratitude.

He pulled his daughter close, kissing her cheek, holding her tight against his heart.

"Thank you, baby," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with love. "Thank you."
