CHAPTER 2 – THE DOCTOR WHO REFUSED TO STAY SILENT
Dr. Caldwell did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
His expression alone silenced every laugh in the room.
He knelt beside Mia, carefully supporting her injured leg without moving the knee.
"Sweetheart," he said gently, "don't try to stand."
Tears streamed down Mia's face as she nodded.
"It hurts..."
"I know. I'm right here."
He examined the twisted brace, then slowly looked up at Caroline.
"Who removed this brace?"
Caroline folded her arms.
"I did. Someone had to stop encouraging her little performance."
The doctor's face hardened.
"Performance?"
He carefully held up the brace so everyone could see it.
"This brace is prescribed after reconstructive surgery. Removing it like this can damage months of healing."
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
"I personally rebuilt this child's knee three months ago."
His voice echoed through the dining room.
"If she had fallen slightly differently, she could have suffered permanent ligament damage."
The room seemed to shrink.
Mark slowly lowered his phone.
Aunt Diane stared at the floor.
Even my father stopped smiling.
Dr. Caldwell reached into his medical case.
"I'll need to examine her at the hospital immediately."
Then he looked directly at Caroline.
"And I strongly suggest nobody touches this brace again."
Caroline laughed nervously.
"Oh, come on. You're making it sound like I assaulted her."
Dr. Caldwell slowly stood.
"You did."
The word landed like a hammer.
"You intentionally removed medically required equipment from a child after being told not to touch it."
He paused.
"I am legally required to document what I just witnessed."
Caroline's confidence disappeared.
"What... what does that mean?"
"It means I will be filing an incident report before I leave tonight."
May you like
For the first time all evening...
Caroline looked afraid.
