CHAPTER 3 – THE FAMILY'S LIES COLLAPSE
The ambulance arrived twelve minutes later.
Two paramedics carefully lifted Mia onto a pediatric stretcher.
She reached for me immediately.
"Mom..."
"I'm here."
"I won't let go."
"I know."
As they prepared to leave, my father finally spoke.
"You're seriously calling an ambulance over this?"
Dr. Caldwell turned toward him.
"No."
"We're calling an ambulance because an adult ignored medical instructions and caused additional injury to a recovering child."
The paramedics quietly photographed the twisted brace.
They photographed the bruising around Mia's knee.
They documented everything.
Caroline suddenly stepped forward.
"Wait. It was just an accident."
Dr. Caldwell looked at her.
"No."
"I heard you accuse her of pretending."
"I heard her mother tell you not to touch the brace."
"You ignored both."
Then he looked toward me.
"Would you like law enforcement notified?"
Every eye turned toward me.
Years ago...
I would have said no.
To keep the peace.
To protect the family.
To avoid making a scene.
I looked down at Mia lying on the stretcher.
Her stuffed bunny rested beside her.
She whispered through tears,
"Did I do something wrong?"
My heart shattered.
I looked back at everyone around that table.
"No."
Then I answered Dr. Caldwell.
"Yes."
"I want everything documented."
Caroline burst into tears.
My mother grabbed my arm.
"Please don't destroy this family."
I slowly removed her hand.
"I didn't."
"The person who hurt my daughter did."
Police officers arrived before the ambulance left.

For the first time in decades...
My family had to answer questions instead of making excuses.
