CHAPTER 4 – ONE YEAR LATER

One year later...

Mia ran across the park.

Actually ran.

No brace.

No limp.

No fear.

Dr. Caldwell smiled as he watched her chase butterflies with the same gray bunny tucked under one arm.

"She looks incredible," he said.

"Because of you."

He shook his head.

"No."

"Because her mother finally protected her."

The investigation had changed everything.

Caroline eventually accepted a plea agreement that included community service, parenting education, and mandatory counseling.

My father tried calling for months.

I never answered.

My mother wrote letters.

I read every one.

I replied to none.

Some people called me unforgiving.

They were wrong.

Forgiveness and access are not the same thing.

I forgave them for my own peace.

But I never again allowed them close enough to hurt my child.

On Mia's seventh birthday, she asked a question while opening presents.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Why don't we go to Grandpa's house anymore?"

I smiled softly.

"Because home isn't where people share your last name."

"It's where people make you feel safe."

She thought about that for a moment.

Then she hugged me tightly.

"I like our home better."

"So do I."

Across the yard, Dr. Caldwell waved goodbye before heading back to the hospital.

Before getting into his car, he looked back one last time.

He watched Mia laughing in the sunshine.

The little girl everyone once accused of pretending.

The little girl whose pain everyone mocked.

The little girl whose life changed because one doctor refused to stay silent.

May you like

And that was the greatest gift anyone could have given her.

THE END
