Chapter 4 - THE REVELATION IN THE STUDY

"You didn't call the police, Beatrice," Arthur said, his voice remarkably steady as he stepped past the threshold into the grand foyer. "Because if you did, we’d have to explain to the local precinct why a prominent family had to pay off a young carpenter forty years ago to keep a very messy pregnancy out of the local papers."
Beatrice slammed the front door shut behind us, her hands trembling despite her rigid posture. She turned to me, her eyes flashing with pure panic. "Clara, go upstairs with Lily immediately. This does not concern you."
"It concerns me very much, Beatrice," I replied, standing my ground in the center of the marble foyer. "Mr. Miller just said his baby was taken away by your late husband, Victor Vance. In this house."
Arthur looked at me, then at Beatrice, his grey eyes heavy with sorrow. "She doesn't know, does she? You kept it from her, too."
"Keep your mouth shut, you pathetic fool!" Beatrice shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure for the first time since I had known her. "Victor paid you twenty thousand dollars in 1988! You signed a non-disclosure agreement! You took the money and vanished!"
"I took the money because I was twenty-one, terrified, and told that if I ever came back, my wife and child would disappear permanently!" Arthur shouted back, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "You think money erases human beings, Beatrice? You think because you live behind iron gates, your sins don't catch up to you?"
I stood frozen, the pieces of a grotesque puzzle finally clicking together in my mind.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, looking between them. "What does this have to do with the Vances?"
Arthur took a deep breath, looking directly at me. "Thirty-eight years ago, Sarah was pregnant with my child. But Victor Vance—Julian’s father—took a dark, predatory interest in her. When Sarah threatened to go to the police after a horrific night in this very house, Victor engineered a cover-up. He paid me off, fabricated adoption papers, and spirited Sarah away to a private clinic upstate."
"And the child?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat. "What happened to the child?"
Arthur pointed a shaking finger at the grand staircase leading to the upper floor. "The baby wasn't adopted out to strangers, Mrs. Vance. Victor kept the baby within his inner circle. He raised the child as his own... to hide the proof of his affair. He raised Julian."
The marble floor seemed to drop out from under me.
Julian. The golden-boy heir of the Vance empire. The man who had inherited millions, who looked down on everyone around him, who had chained my five-year-old daughter to a porch post because she lacked "proper breeding."
Julian Vance wasn't a Vance at all. He was the biological son of a working-class carpenter and a terrified housekeeper, stolen at birth by the patriarch of a corrupt dynasty.
Beatrice slumped against the mahogany console table, defeated. The great facade had finally cracked wide open.
