Chapter 8 - SUNRISE ON THE COAST

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over the rugged cliffs of coastal Maine, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and soft pink.

The sprawling Arlington estate in Connecticut was gone—sold off in a messy liquidation bankruptcy proceeding to settle the multi-million-dollar embezzling debts Julian had left behind. Beatrice had retreated to a quiet, modest retirement cottage in Switzerland, humbled and broken by the reckoning that had upended her life. Arthur Miller was finally reunited with the truth of his past, spending his golden years restoring antique furniture in a sunny workshop near our new home.

And Lucas, Lily, and I? We had built a brand-new life from the ground up.

I stood on the wraparound wooden deck of our coastal craftsman home, holding a mug of hot coffee, watching the waves crash against the rocky shore below.

Footsteps echoed softly on the wooden planks behind me. Strong, warm arms wrapped gently around my waist, and a familiar chin rested comfortably on my shoulder.

"Penny for your thoughts," Lucas whispered, kissing the side of my neck.

I leaned back into his embrace, smiling as I watched Lily chase a golden retriever across the green lawn, her laughter carrying on the crisp ocean breeze.

"I was just thinking about how strange life is," I murmured, turning around in his arms to face him. "If you hadn't walked through that front gate six months ago... if we hadn't uncovered the lies that held that toxic family together... we never would have found our way back to each other."

Lucas cupped my cheek with his hand, his grey eyes shining with a deep, unconditional love that I had never known existed. "We were always meant to find each other, Clara. The truth has a way of tearing down walls, no matter how high someone builds them."

"And Lily?" I asked softly.

"Lily is safe," Lucas smiled, looking out toward our daughter as she waved wildly at us from the yard. "She's loved. And she's never going to know a single day of coldness again."

I leaned up on my tiptoes and kissed him—a long, sweet kiss filled with the promise of a future untainted by secrets, where the past was finally laid to rest, and the sunrise belonged entirely to us.
