Chapter 10 - THE SHADOWS OF FEDERAL PRISON

10 -

Two hundred miles away, inside the sterile, fluorescent-lit intake facility of the federal detention center, Vanessa Vance sat on a stainless-steel bench in a holding cell. Her designer clothes had been confiscated hours ago, replaced by a coarse, orange jumpsuit that felt like sandpaper against her skin. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, completely devoid of makeup, exposing the frantic, hollow panic in her eyes.

The heavy steel door rattled, and a corrections officer slid a small plastic tray through the meal slot on the bottom.

"Eat," the officer grunted coldly before walking away down the concrete corridor.

Vanessa didn't touch the tray. She stared at her reflection in the smudged steel surface of the cell wall, her mind racing in dizzying circles. Every scheme, every fabricated alibi, every bribe, every whispered conversation—all of it had been systematically dismantled in less than twenty-four hours.

The sound of heavy boots echoing down the hallway made her flinch. A guard stopped outside her cell, keying open the electronic lock with a sharp buzz.

"Visitor for you, Vance," the guard said, pulling the door open. "Ten minutes. No physical contact."

Vanessa looked up, her heart leaping into her throat with a brief, desperate spark of hope. Did her father send high-priced appellate lawyers? Did someone find a loophole?

She stood up quickly, smoothing down the orange jumpsuit, and stepped out into the consultation booth. Behind the thick, reinforced glass partition sat a man in a sharp, dark federal suit. He wasn't a defense attorney.

It was Marcus Ruiz.

Vanessa sank into the metal chair on her side of the glass, her hands trembling as she picked up the heavy black telephone receiver. With shaking fingers, she pressed it against her ear.

Marcus picked up his receiver on the other side, his face completely devoid of expression.

"What do you want?" Vanessa hissed through the speaker, her voice cracking with suppressed hysteria. "Where are my attorneys? You can't hold me here without bail—my uncle is a federal judge—"

"Your uncle recused himself three hours ago, Vanessa," Marcus interrupted, his voice calm, steady, and terrifyingly cold. "In fact, every judge in this district has filed recusals after the SEC and the DOJ unsealed your master indictment. You're looking at forty counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, corporate espionage, and attempted premeditated murder."

Vanessa gripped the edges of the plastic table, leaning forward until her face was inches from the glass. "This is a setup! Elena staged the whole thing! She faked the fall, she planted the digital files, she engineered the entire trap—"

"Even if she did," Marcus replied smoothly, "every single piece of evidence holding your indictment together was legally obtained under federal warrant. The financial transfers? Verified by three international banking institutions. The toxic compound in the prenatal vitamins? Fingerprinted, chemical-matched, and traced directly to your personal credit card receipts."

He leaned closer to the glass, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

"You spent years destroying people from the shadows, Vanessa, believing your pedigree made you untouchable. But you made one fatal mistake."

"What mistake?" Vanessa spat out, tears of pure rage finally spilling down her cheeks.

"You thought Elena was a victim," Marcus said quietly. "You didn't realize you were walking into a courtroom where she wrote every single law."

Before Vanessa could scream, before she could slam the phone down, Marcus placed his receiver back on the cradle, turned around, and walked out of the visitation room without looking back.

Vanessa sat alone in the sterile booth, the harsh fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, as the crushing reality of her absolute defeat settled over her like a lead weight.
