Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM CONFRONTATION

8 -
The executive boardroom on the top floor of Howard Enterprises was designed to project absolute, unshakeable power. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline, while a thirty-foot mahogany conference table dominated the center of the room, surrounded by leather chairs occupied by the most powerful, entrenched men in the corporate sector.
When the heavy double doors opened and Elena walked in—followed hesitantly by Richard—a wave of disapproving murmurs rippled across the table.
"What is the meaning of this?" barked Arthur Sterling, the senior board member and a man who had served under three generations of Howard CEOs. He glared at Elena over his half-moon reading glasses. "This is a closed executive session. Family matters and police investigations have no place on this floor, especially not with unauthorized guests."
Elena didn't blink. She walked directly to the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the CEO—and stood behind it, resting her hands on the polished mahogany surface. Richard slumped into a chair a few seats down, looking completely defeated.
"I am not an unauthorized guest, Mr. Sterling," Elena said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room. "I am the primary creditor holding the collateral on over forty percent of this corporation's outstanding debt restructuring, and the only person in this room who knows why the SEC hasn't already raided this floor."
Dead silence fell over the boardroom. Arthur Sterling’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson.
"Insolence!" Sterling roared, slamming his palm onto the table. "You think because your cousin-in-law or whatever Vanessa was to you went rogue, you can walk in here and—"
"Vanessa Vance didn't just go rogue, Arthur," Elena interrupted, her tone sharp enough to draw blood. She reached into her briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of manila folders, and tossed them across the table. They slid across the polished wood, landing neatly in front of the senior board members.
"For the past three years," Elena continued, stepping away from the head of the table and pacing slowly along its side, "while you gentlemen were busy playing golf and approving inflated quarterly bonuses, Vanessa was siphoning funds through shell companies registered in the Caymans. And according to these ledgers, she didn't do it alone."
Sterling’s hand froze as he reached for the folder nearest him. He opened the first page, and the color instantly drained from his weathered face.
"These files contain the routing numbers for unauthorized transfers originating from subsidiary accounts you personally oversee, Mr. Sterling," Elena said softly, stopping right behind his chair and leaning down slightly. "Along with the offshore accounts where your share of the corporate restructuring kickbacks was deposited last quarter."
Sterling looked up at her, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and impotent rage. "This... this is forgery. This is blackmail!"
"Call it whatever helps you sleep tonight," Elena replied evenly, straightening up. "The federal investigators currently occupying the lobby downstairs call it evidence. They have copies of every single transaction, every encrypted email, and every meeting log between you, Vanessa, and the Apex Corp raiders."
The rest of the board members hastily opened their folders. Within seconds, the room was filled with the sound of frantic page-turning and ragged, panicked breathing. The iron-clad illusion of corporate invincibility had completely evaporated.
"What do you want?" whispered Henderson, another senior director, his hands shaking as he dropped the files back onto the table.
Elena walked back to the head of the table and rested her hands on the mahogany surface once more.
"Effective immediately, Richard Howard steps down as CEO during the federal compliance review," Elena announced, her voice echoing in the silent room. "I am assuming the role of Executive Vice President of Asset Restructuring and Corporate Governance with full executive voting privileges. You will ratify this appointment unanimously in the next sixty seconds, or I hand these folders directly to the Department of Justice before lunch."
Arthur Sterling looked around the table. He saw the pale faces of his colleagues, the absolute defeat in their eyes. They knew they had been outmaneuvered completely. There was no escape, no legal loophole, and no way out.
Slowly, with trembling fingers, Sterling raised his hand.
One by one, the other directors followed suit.

Elena looked around the room, her expression devoid of triumph—only the cold, absolute satisfaction of a strategy executed to perfection.
"Meeting adjourned," Elena said.
