Chapter 13 - THE ECHOES OF JUSTICE

13 -

Six months later, the federal courthouse downtown was surrounded by a swarm of media vans and flashing camera lights. The trial of Vanessa Vance had reached its final sentencing phase, drawing intense public interest as one of the most explosive white-collar criminal cases of the decade.

Inside the packed courtroom, the air was thick with tension. Seated at the defense table was Vanessa, her face gaunt, her skin pale, and her signature arrogance entirely replaced by a hollow, defeated stare. The orange jumpsuit had been swapped for a standard federal detainee uniform, and her manicured hands were cuffed to a waist chain.

On the prosecution side sat Marcus Ruiz, flanked by federal investigators and financial compliance officers. And sitting quietly in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an immaculate, tailored white coat that commanded absolute authority, was Elena Howard.

She didn't look at Vanessa. She didn't need to.

Judge Robert Vance—a senior federal magistrate who had long ago severed any familial connection to the defendant—adjusted his glasses, looked down from the elevated bench, and cleared his throat.

"The court has reviewed all federal indictments, financial audit reports, corporate sabotage logs, and evidence of attempted premeditated murder," Judge Vance announced, his voice echoing gravely through the vaulted courtroom. "The defendant, Vanessa Vance, has been found guilty on all forty counts without exception."

A low murmur rippled through the gallery of reporters and spectators.

Vanessa’s head snapped down. Her lips trembled as she stared blankly at the polished wooden defense table.

"For the crimes of corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder in the first degree," Judge Vance continued, raising his gavel with deliberate slowness, "this court sentences Vanessa Vance to forty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Asset forfeiture of all domestic and offshore holdings is ordered immediately."

CRACK.

The heavy gavel struck the sound block, sealing the verdict with a sharp, final report that put an absolute end to Vanessa’s reign of manipulation.

As federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Vanessa by the arms and hoisting her out of her chair, she caught one brief glimpse of Elena sitting calmly in the front row of the gallery.

For a fraction of a second, Vanessa’s eyes widened with a desperate, venomous flash of hatred. She opened her mouth as if to scream, but the marshals forcefully pulled her back toward the holding exit, cutting off her voice entirely as the heavy oak doors swung shut behind her.

Elena didn't flinch. She simply adjusted her coat, stood up smoothly, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
