Chapter 6 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE STUDY

The footsteps grew closer, heavy and deliberate against the hallway hardwood.
"James," I whispered urgently, my heart leaping into my throat as I clutched the backpack stuffed with the stolen documents against my chest. "They're coming!"
James didn't panic. With the calm, chilling efficiency of a combat veteran, he slid the iron safe door shut—leaving it unlocked just enough to look undisturbed—and grabbed my hand, pulling me swiftly behind the heavy velvet drapes that framed the dark bay window.
The timing was absolute perfection.
The office door swung open with a sharp click, and the overhead lights flooded the room with a harsh, blinding glare.
My father walked in first, looking older, gaunter, and far more desperate than he had at Christmas dinner. Behind him strode Richard Sterling, his designer coat unbuttoned, his face twisted in a snarl of exhaustion and panic.
"I told you, Arthur, the files are right here," Richard muttered, walking straight toward the executive desk.
My father strode over to the framed painting of the Hudson River, swung it aside, and punched the digital combination into the safe. He spun the dial, pulled the heavy iron door open, and immediately reached inside.
His fingers clutched empty air where the brown medical examiner's envelope and the transfer deeds had been sitting just sixty seconds before.
My father froze. His hand hovered inside the empty metal box, trembling violently.
"Richard..." my father's voice came out as a strangled whisper, devoid of all color. "Richard, look at this."
Richard hurried around the desk, peering into the safe. "What? What are you talking about?"
"They're gone," my father choked out, his eyes widening in sheer horror as realization hit him like a physical blow. "The medical notes... the original bank transfers... everything is gone."
"Who was in this house?!" Richard roared, spinning around and scanning the empty office, his face turning a furious shade of crimson. "Somebody took them! Someone was in this house tonight!"
Before my father could answer, James stepped smoothly out from behind the velvet drapes, releasing the heavy fabric with a soft rustle.
I stepped out right beside him, my backpack securely zipped, my posture straight and unwavering.
My father let out a terrified gasp, stumbling backward until his hip struck the edge of the mahogany desk. Richard spun around, his hands balling into tight fists as his eyes locked onto us in sheer disbelief.
"Chloe?!" my father breathed out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get in?"
"The side door was unlocked, Dad," I replied, my voice cold, steady, and devoid of any familial warmth. "Just like it always was when we were growing up. Only this time, we didn't come to visit. We came to collect."
Richard glared at James, his eyes darting toward James's coat where the tactical holster was partially visible. "You broke into private property! That's B&E! That's illegal search and seizure!"
"It's not a break-in when you have federal asset forfeiture warrants pending," James said smoothly, his voice dropping into that chilling, authoritative register that commanded absolute terror. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, tapping the screen to display an active digital recording interface. "Every word you've spoken in this room for the last ten minutes has been recorded and transmitted directly to the U.S. Attorney's office and the state police."
My father collapsed heavily into his executive desk chair, his head dropping into his shaking hands as the crushing reality of his impending destruction finally caved in on him. "We're ruined," he muttered into his palms. "It's all over."
"It's not over yet, Arthur, you coward!" Richard snarled, stepping aggressively toward us, his face twisted in desperate rage. He lunged forward, grabbing a heavy brass desk paperweight from the mahogany surface, raising it high above his head. "I'm not going to prison because of a couple of self-righteous hypocrites!"
Before Richard could take another step, James moved with terrifying, blinding speed.
In a fraction of a second, James closed the distance between them, ducking inside Richard's guard, seizing his wrist, and twisting it sharply downward with brutal, calculated force.
Richard let out a sharp, agonized yelp as the heavy brass paperweight clattered loudly against the hardwood floor. James swept his leg behind Richard's knees, sending him crashing hard onto the Persian rug, pressing his forearm firmly across the back of Richard's neck with absolute, unyielding control.
"Don't even think about it," James whispered right into Richard's ear, pinning him to the floor.

At that exact moment, the wailing sirens of approaching police cruisers echoed loudly through the suburban night, their flashing red and blue lights painting the dark office walls in rapid, frantic strokes.
The cavalry had arrived.
