Chapter 7 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE DYNASTY

-7-

The blue and red flashing lights of four police cruisers illuminated the entire suburban street, casting jagged shadows across the snow-covered lawn of my parents' house. Within minutes, federal marshals and local detectives swarmed the property.

Richard Sterling was hauled out of the house in handcuffs, his expensive cashmere coat dragging in the snow, his face pale with humiliation as flash photography from a local news blogger captured the spectacle from the sidewalk. My father was escorted out shortly after, walking with his head bowed low, leaning heavily on a state trooper as the reality of his arrest for financial fraud and accessory to murder finally broke his spirit.

By sunrise, the news had hit every major digital news desk in Manhattan: Prominent Financial Consultant Richard Sterling and Corporate Attorney Arthur Vance Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Estate Fraud and Medical Tampering Investigation.

I sat at the kitchen island in our brownstone, nursing a cup of black coffee, watching the morning news broadcast replay the footage of Richard being led away in cuffs. Across the room, Emma was happily chewing on a teething toy in her high chair, entirely unaware of the historical storm that had just swept through our family tree.

James walked into the kitchen, holding his uniform jacket over his arm. He looked tired, but the tension that had gripped his shoulders for days was completely gone.

"Federal prosecutors are moving to freeze all remaining offshore accounts by noon," James said, pouring himself a cup of coffee. "Your father's assets, Richard's corporate holdings, and Lauren's trust funds are all locked down. They won't have a penny left for legal defense."

"And Lauren?" I asked quietly, looking up at him. "Has anyone heard from her?"

James took a sip of his coffee, leaning against the counter. "She locked herself inside their Park Avenue penthouse last night when the news broke. The state police served her with a subpoena at dawn for conspiracy and document tampering. Her lawyers have already abandoned her."

Just as James finished speaking, my cell phone—lying face up on the marble countertop—lit up with an incoming call.

The caller ID flashed a name I hadn't expected to see ever again: Lauren.

I stared at the screen, watching the digital numbers flash silently. The phone buzzed persistently, vibrating against the smooth marble surface.

"Answer it," James instructed quietly, stepping closer and placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Let her hear the reality she created."

I reached out, tapped the screen, and slid my thumb to accept the call, putting it on speakerphone so James could hear every word.

"Chloe?"

Lauren’s voice didn't sound like the arrogant, untouchable queen of Manhattan society anymore. It sounded small, cracked, breathless, and soaked in raw, hysterical panic.

"I'm here, Lauren," I said evenly, my voice completely calm.

"Chloe, you have to help me!" Lauren sobbed loudly on the other end, the sound of breaking glass and frantic footsteps echoing in the background of her penthouse. "Richard has been arrested! Dad is in custody! The police are downstairs in the lobby, they have a warrant to seize the apartment, and my bank cards have all been declined! They're going to take everything!"

"Everything you stole, you mean," I corrected coldly.

"Please, Chloe! We're sisters!" Lauren wailed, her voice pitching up into a desperate shriek. "Call James! Tell him to call off his federal contacts! You can't do this to me! You can't destroy my life over... over a stupid mistake at Christmas!"

A bitter, humorless laugh escaped my lips.

"A stupid mistake, Lauren?" I asked, my voice cutting through her hysterics like a scalpel. "You didn't make a mistake. You assaulted a six-month-old baby, you laughed in my face, and you spent five years covering up the theft and murder of our grandfather. You thought you were untouchable. You thought the world would bow down to your cruelty forever."

"Chloe, please—!"

"You never cared about family, Lauren," I continued, every word landing with absolute, crushing finality. "And you certainly never cared about Emma. Now you get to experience what it feels like when the world you built on lies completely crumbles beneath your feet."

"Chloe, wait, don't hang up—!"

I tapped the red end call button on my screen.

The phone went dead silent.

I looked up at James. He smiled softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to my forehead.

"It's over," James whispered.

"No," I replied, looking down at Emma, who flashed a toothless, joyful smile back at me from her high chair. "It's just beginning."
