Chapter 12

The courtroom fell into an absolute,

stifling silence as the sheer weight of the evidence settled over everyone.

Judge Vance sat perfectly still for a long moment,

her eyes scanning the financial records and the damning text messages on her screen.

When she finally looked up,

her gaze fixed upon Scott with a cold,

searing intensity that made him visibly flinch.

"Mr. Vance,"

the judge spoke,

her voice terrifyingly calm,

"does your client have any response to this evidence?"

"Is there any denial of these financial transactions,"

she demanded,

"or these text messages outlining his plan to defraud his family?"

Marcus Vance stood up slowly,

his shoulders slumped,

all of his previous legal swagger completely drained away.

"Your Honor,"

Vance stammered,

not even looking at his client,

"we...

we were not made aware of these specific facts by our client."

"As an officer of the court,"

he admitted with a heavy sigh,

"I cannot in good faith contest the authenticity of these certified bank and travel records."

Scott snapped,

turning on his own lawyer in a fit of wild,

frenzied desperation.

"What are you doing?!"

Scott screamed,

grabbing Vance's arm and shaking it violently,

"you are supposed to be defending me!

Do something!

Tell her it's a lie!"

"Sit down,

Scott!"

Vance hissed under his breath,

shoving his hand away with deep professional disgust,

"it's over,

you idiot,

you lied to me about everything."

In the gallery behind them,

Kayla suddenly stood up,

her face twisted in a mixture of panic and sudden rage.

"Scott,

what is happening?!"

she yelled out,

completely ignoring courtroom decorum,

"what do you mean you don't get the money?!"

"You told me that seven million dollars was guaranteed!"

she shrieked,

her voice echoing off the walls,

"I spent forty thousand dollars on credit cards yesterday because of you!"

"Silence in the gallery!"

the judge roared,

slamming her gavel down with immense force,

"bailiff,

remove that woman from the courtroom immediately!"

Two burly court officers stepped forward,

grabbing Kayla by her arms as she began to scream and cry hysterically.

"You promised me,

Scott!"

she screamed as she was dragged down the aisle toward the exit doors,

"you said we were going to be rich!

You told me your wife was stupid and wouldn't get anything!"

"You lied to me!

You ruined my life!"

her voice faded away as the heavy wooden doors slammed shut behind her,

leaving a ringing silence in her wake.

I watched the entire spectacle without moving a single muscle,

sitting perfectly straight in my chair,

feeling an incredible sense of vindication.

The woman who had laughed at me while I packed my bags in the dark,

the man who had treated me like disposable garbage for years,

were now tearing each other apart in public.

Scott looked toward the exit doors,

then looked back at me,

his eyes filled with a terrifying,

belated realization of what he had thrown away.

He had sacrificed a faithful wife,

a loving marriage,

and a seven point three million dollar fortune,

all for a mistress who only cared about his phantom wealth.

He was completely alone,

May you like

trapped in a web of his own making,

and there was no escape.
