Chapter 6

The days leading up to Friday passed in a surreal,

slow-motion blur of intense anticipation and quiet preparation.

I spent my time reviewing my financial accounts,

ensuring that my personal savings were secure and untouched by Scott's reckless spending.

On Wednesday afternoon,

I received a phone call from a mutual friend of ours,

Sarah,

who had no idea about the hidden legal battle taking place.

"Avery,

I am so incredibly sorry to hear about the divorce,"

Sarah sighed over the line,

her voice filled with genuine pity,

"Scott has been telling everyone that you two just grew apart."

"But honestly,"

she whispered conspiratorially,

"he is acting completely insane right now."

"He took Kayla to a high-end luxury car dealership yesterday,"

she revealed,

confirming my suspicions about his financial recklessness,

"and he bought her a custom SUV using a massive bridge loan."

"He is telling everyone that he is coming into a massive inheritance this weekend,"

she continued,

"and he is already planning a massive celebration party at a five-star hotel."

"He even invited most of our old friends,"

she added,

sounding disgusted by his behavior,

"claiming that he is finally free from his financial burdens."

I held back a laugh,

gripping the phone tightly against my ear,

marveling at the sheer depth of his stupidity.

"Let him celebrate,"

I replied calmly,

keeping my voice soft and deceptively mournful,

"he has always cared more about appearances than anything else."

"Are you going to be okay,

Avery?"

Sarah asked with real concern,

"he is saying that you won't get a single dime from the estate."

"I will be perfectly fine,

Sarah,"

I assured her,

a genuine smile forming on my lips,

"justice has a funny way of working itself out in the end."

After hanging up the phone,

I felt a wave of cold satisfaction wash over my body,

realizing that Scott was digging his own financial grave deeper every single hour.

By taking out massive bridge loans based on a future inheritance he would never receive,

he was guaranteeing his absolute financial ruin.

The banks would come collecting the moment the court finalized the estate distribution,

and when they discovered he had zero dollars to his name,

they would repossess everything.

The sports car,

Kayla's new custom SUV,

and even the suburban house would be seized to pay off his massive debts.

He was building a fragile castle out of playing cards,

believing that his grandmother's money would arrived just in time to save him,

unaware that a massive legal hurricane was about to blow it all away.

I walked over to my closet and selected my outfit for the courtroom hearing,

choosing a sharp,

tailored charcoal-grey suit that commanded respect.

It was elegant,

professional,

and powerful,

the exact opposite of the broken woman Scott expected to see.

I spent the rest of the evening reading a book,

enjoying the quiet peace of my small apartment,

refusing to let his arrogance disturb my mental tranquility.

He had spent the last five years making me feel small,

constantly reminding me that his family was wealthy and mine was ordinary,

treating me like a secondary character in his grand life story.

But tomorrow,

the roles would be completely reversed,

May you like

the truth would be revealed to the entire world,

and I would finally claim the legacy that his grandmother intended for me to have.
