Chapter 20

As the autumn leaves began to fall,

blanketing the city in beautiful shades of gold and amber,

I received one final piece of news regarding the aftermath of the lawsuit.

Jerome called me into his office for a routine check-in regarding the final closure of the estate tax filings.

After the paperwork was signed,

he leaned back in his chair,

holding a local legal journal in his hands with a curious smile.

"I thought you might find this interesting,

Avery,"

Jerome said,

sliding a page across the desk toward me.

It was a public legal notice detailing a high-profile bankruptcy declaration and a simultaneous criminal sentencing.

Scott Henderson had officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy,

his remaining assets liquidated to cover less than ten percent of his massive debts to the bridge loan company.

But more shockingly,

his ex-mistress Kayla Higgins was also listed in a separate legal section.

It turned out that Kayla had attempted to return several high-end designer items she had purchased during their spending spree,

but she had used falsified credit profiles and altered receipts to try and get cash refunds.

She had been caught by store security at a luxury boutique,

arrested for felony fraud and grand larceny,

and was now facing a lengthy period of probation and a massive restitution order.

Their toxic partnership,

built entirely on a foundation of stolen wealth and mutual deception,

had imploded in the most spectacular fashion imaginable.

"They deserved each other,"

Jerome noted quietly,

shaking his head at the tragic stupidity of their choices.

"They destroyed their own lives trying to steal something that didn't belong to them,"

he added.

"Yes,"

I agreed,

looking out the large window at the beautiful city skyline below.

"They were so focused on the prize that they never considered the cost of their actions."

"But you,

Avery,"

Jerome smiled warmly,

"you have used this opportunity to create something truly meaningful."

"The charitable foundation you funded is already helping dozens of women every single week,"

he praised me,

"and your grandmother-in-law's legacy is doing immense good in this world."

"That is the best revenge possible,"

I murmured,

feeling a deep sense of accomplishment.

"Living well,

doing good,

and leaving the past completely behind."

I thanked Jerome for his incredible support throughout the entire ordeal,

knowing that I had found not just a brilliant lawyer,

but a true friend for life.

I left his office building,

stepping out into the crisp autumn air,

feeling lighter than I ever had before.

The storm had fully passed,

the debris had been cleared away,

and the foundation of my new life was stronger than iron.

I walked toward my car,

ready to drive back to my beautiful,

May you like

peaceful home,

excited for whatever adventures the future held for me.
