Chapter 17 - THE BOY MARTIN BURIED

Martin Shaw asked for the photograph before answering questions.

Maya refused to give him the original.

She placed a copy on the interview table.

Martin looked at it for three seconds.

Then his face collapsed.

“Benjamin.”

Emily watched from the adjoining room.

Martin had already admitted secretly monitoring her for years. He had resigned from Bennett’s board rather than argue that good intentions erased the violation.

Now another secret had arrived.

“Your son?” Maya asked.

“Yes.”

“Official records say Benjamin Shaw died at seventeen.”

“Yes.”

“Did he?”

Martin did not answer.

Maya waited.

Finally:

“No.”

Emily stood.

Sarah touched her arm.

“Let him finish.”

Martin explained that Benjamin had attended St. Matthew’s with Daniel.

Unlike Daniel, Benjamin knew why Crownstone watched the school.

Martin had accidentally left one of James Bennett’s controlled-leak reports at home. Benjamin read enough to recognize Adrian Vale’s name.

He began watching the watchers.

“He was seventeen,” Maya said.

“I told him to stop.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

Benjamin photographed Adrian meeting Evelyn.

He followed a Crownstone employee to the mansion.

Then he discovered Michael Whitmore delivering information to James.

Benjamin thought Michael was betraying Daniel.

He confronted him.

Michael told the truth.

The ten percent.

Project Hearth.

Evelyn’s payments.

Daniel’s future inheritance.

Benjamin suddenly knew enough to become dangerous to Adrian.

Two weeks later, Martin’s family car crashed.

Martin’s wife survived.

The rear passenger was burned beyond visual identification.

Dental records identified Benjamin.

Martin believed his son dead.

Until James visited him at the hospital.

“He told me Benjamin was alive,” Martin whispered.

Emily entered the room.

Martin looked up.

“You let your family bury an empty coffin?”

“No.”

“There was a body?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

“I still don’t know.”

James claimed Benjamin escaped the vehicle before the fuel tank ignited. A Crownstone surveillance operative found him first but did not kill him.

The operative wanted money.

James paid.

Then he moved Benjamin into protection.

“You agreed?” Emily asked.

“I was told Adrian would kill him if Benjamin returned.”

“Did your wife know?”

“No.”

Martin’s voice cracked.

“She died believing our son was dead.”

Emily felt no satisfaction in his pain.

But she did not soften the question.

“How long did you know Benjamin survived?”

“Seventeen years.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

James deliberately separated Martin from the relocation.

Martin received one annual confirmation.

Nothing more.

After James died, the confirmations continued for five years.

Then stopped.

The final letter contained only a code.

B-10 SAFE.

Sarah frowned.

“B-10.”

The hidden ten percent.

Martin nodded.

“I thought James was telling me Benjamin had been assigned to protect the succession file.”

Maya searched the old Bennett register.

No Benjamin Shaw.

No B-10.

Then the forensic team found a private entity created by James:

B10 Fiduciary Services.

Director:

Benjamin Martin Shaw.

Status:

Active.

Emily stared.

Benjamin was not only alive.

He had become the legal custodian of Daniel’s ten percent.

That explained why the interest never transferred when Daniel turned thirty.

James’s instructions required Benjamin to verify that Crownstone had no control over the beneficiary.

Daniel had already signed Adrian’s recruitment agreement.

Benjamin froze the transfer.

Legally.

Secretly.

Daniel never learned.

Evelyn never learned.

Adrian suspected.

That suspicion explained much of the marriage scheme.

Adrian did not only want Emily’s Bennett shares.

He wanted Daniel’s dormant ten percent activated, then directed through Daniel’s promised voting agreement.

If Daniel obtained ten percent and influenced Emily’s forty-two, Crownstone’s nine-percent position could suddenly control major decisions.

Daniel had been both infiltrator and asset.

Emily felt sick.

Not because it excused him.

It made the manipulation older.

More precise.

But every forged guarantee was still Daniel’s choice.

Every lie during their marriage remained his.

The slap remained his hand.

Martin looked through the glass.

“Benjamin believed Daniel could still walk away.”

“How do you know?”

“One message.”

He produced an encrypted phone from his attorney’s bag.

The message was three years old.

Do not release Michael’s interest. D.W. is compromised, but not fully owned. J.B. was right about one thing: being manipulated does not remove responsibility, but responsibility does not make manipulation imaginary.

Emily read it twice.

Benjamin understood the distinction she had been struggling to preserve.

Maya traced the message origin.

The device had connected to a private Bennett network.

Inside the mansion.

Three years ago.

Someone with Benjamin’s credentials had physically entered Emily’s home while she and Daniel were married.

Security archives showed one unexplained maintenance visit.

A man using the name Thomas Bell spent forty-two minutes inside the west wing.

The face was partially hidden.

But his height and scar matched Benjamin’s childhood medical records.

“What was in the west wing?” Maya asked.

Emily knew immediately.

“The portrait gallery.”

Behind one portrait hung the access panel to the old Project Hearth room.

They returned to the mansion.

The hidden room had been searched weeks earlier.

This time Sarah examined the portrait frame.

A narrow compartment opened behind James Bennett’s painting.

Inside was an envelope addressed:

EMILY — WHEN DANIEL LEARNS THE TEN PERCENT IS HIS.

The envelope was empty.

Someone had removed the letter recently.

The security system showed the compartment opening the night Daniel slapped Emily.

Not before.

Not years ago.

At 9:17 p.m.

While Emily was walking away from the mansion.

The user credential belonged to:

May you like

BENJAMIN SHAW.

👉 Benjamin Shaw was alive and had secretly frozen Daniel’s legitimate inheritance—but someone using Benjamin’s identity entered the mansion on the night of the slap and stole James’s final letter to Emily.
