Chapter 22 - THE MAN WITH JAMES’S CANE

Federal authorities coordinated with Swiss police before Emily agreed to speak to the man.

No private reunion.

No secret room.

No emotional proof accepted without verification.

The man entered a secure interview office.

His face appeared on Emily’s screen.

Older than James would have been.

Thinner.

Scar near the mouth.

But familiar.

“My daughter.”

Emily felt nothing she expected.

No instant recognition.

No relief.

Only anger.

“Do not call me that until we verify who you are.”

The man smiled.

“That sounds like you.”

“Anyone who studied me could say that.”

DNA testing began.

Fingerprints followed.

Dental records.

Old surgical history.

While technicians worked, Emily asked questions.

“What did you give me for my twenty-first birthday?”

“A Bennett signet.”

“What did you say?”

“That ownership should never be confused with identity.”

The phrase existed in family letters.

Not enough.

“What did I break in the greenhouse when I was nine?”

“A ceramic fox.”

Wrong.

Emily leaned back.

“I broke a blue irrigation valve.”

The man closed his eyes.

“Then I am remembering Sarah’s story.”

Sarah stiffened beside Emily.

Only James knew Sarah had broken the ceramic fox as a child visiting the estate.

The stranger had mixed memories of the two girls.

Not James.

DNA confirmed it.

Close Bennett relation.

Not father.

Uncle.

Joseph Bennett.

Emily looked at him.

“You changed your face.”

“After Hawthorne.”

“You used James’s cane.”

“It was mine before his.”

“The ring?”

“Family property.”

“You impersonated him in Geneva.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Emily Rhodes cooperating.”

The older woman looked disgusted.

Joseph had approached her eight years earlier as James because she would never meet him otherwise.

He needed access to the reserve.

She refused.

Benjamin later discovered the deception.

“Why come now?” Emily asked.

Joseph’s eyes shifted toward Daniel’s ten-percent file.

“Because the succession structure cannot be resolved without me.”

“You gave up the ten percent decades ago.”

“Under coercion.”

“You tried to frame Michael Whitmore.”

“He stole records.”

“He exposed fraud.”

Joseph leaned forward.

“You have heard James’s version your entire life.”

Emily almost laughed.

“My father hid half the truth from me constantly. Trust me, I am no longer confusing his version with scripture.”

Joseph stopped.

Emily continued.

“But your disagreement with James does not restore property automatically. Show evidence.”

Joseph produced a contract.

Original Project Hearth settlement.

It said Joseph transferred ten percent temporarily until legal claims resolved.

No permanent relinquishment language.

Sarah examined the signature.

“If authentic, there may be a claim.”

Daniel’s ten-percent inheritance became uncertain again.

Michael’s restitution interest depended upon James having authority to assign it permanently.

Joseph argued James never did.

Emily refused to decide.

“Court.”

Joseph looked surprised.

“This is a family matter.”

“That sentence has caused enough damage.”

He tried another route.

“If Daniel’s claim fails, the shares return to Bennett.”

“To whom?”

“You.”

Emily shook her head.

“No. If they return, the corporate register and court determine ownership.”

Joseph’s smile disappeared.

“You are willing to let ten percent leave your control?”

“If it is not mine.”

Again.

The principle mattered most when expensive.

Maya questioned Joseph about Daniel.

He admitted identifying him as a useful candidate.

“Why Daniel?”

“Michael’s son. Evelyn’s weakness. James’s daughter.”

Three leverage points in one person.

“Did you expect him to marry Emily?”

“No.”

“Did you encourage it?”

“When Adrian told me Daniel had feelings, yes.”

“Did you tell Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel know you?”

“Not by name.”

Joseph accepted no responsibility for Daniel’s later violence.

Maya agreed he did not control Daniel’s hand.

But Joseph had engineered the access.

That carried consequences of its own.

Then Sarah asked:

“Who entered the mansion using Benjamin’s credential?”

Joseph looked at Benjamin.

Benjamin’s expression changed.

“You know.”

Joseph nodded.

“My son.”

The room went silent.

Joseph had a son.

Peter Bennett.

Born after his marriage to Emily Rhodes ended.

Mother unknown in public files.

Peter grew up under another surname and joined Crownstone’s technology division.

He had copied Benjamin’s credentials.

He stole James’s letter.

He attacked Benjamin at the train station.

“Where is Peter?” Maya asked.

Joseph did not answer.

The building alarm sounded in Geneva.

Emily Rhodes’s reserve account had initiated a full transfer.

Not her restitution transfer.

All $186 million.

Destination:

Crownstone Recovery Fund.

Authorized by:

PETER J. BENNETT.

Emily Rhodes stared at Joseph.

“You brought him here.”

Joseph looked genuinely frightened.

“No.”

A message appeared on Emily junior’s phone.

Thank you for assembling every claimant in one place.

Attached was a live camera feed from the Bennett mansion.

Peter Bennett stood inside the foyer where Daniel had slapped Emily.

He held the original master property file removed from the safe on the first night.

The file everyone thought Daniel had taken.

Peter looked into the camera.

Then placed one hand on the marble console.

“This house was never the prize,” he said.

May you like

“The reserve was.”

👉 Joseph was exposed as the fake “James,” but his son Peter seized the $186 million reserve and revealed he had been inside Emily’s mansion since the night Daniel threw her out.
