Chapter 8 - the gala where they first met

Emily remembered the night perfectly.

The Bennett Children’s Foundation gala.

Gold lights.

Champagne.

A string quartet.

Daniel standing beside a silent auction table pretending not to know whether a painting was worth bidding on.

He made her laugh.

She thought it happened naturally.

Now the guest list looked different.

Daniel had not purchased a ticket.

Crownstone had added him to its sponsor table.

Adrian Vale approved the guest list.

Six months earlier, a Crownstone research file had been created.

Subject:

Emily Bennett.

Age.

Properties.

Board affiliations.

Travel schedule.

Charitable interests.

Relationship status.

Recently ended engagement.

Preferred restaurants.

Social circle.

Even photographs.

Sarah looked horrified.

“They profiled you.”

Emily stared.

“Like an acquisition target.”

Exactly.

Daniel had been selected.

Why him?

The file contained a section.

Candidate Profile — D.W.

Socially adaptable.

No major independent wealth.

Family lifestyle expectations exceed income.

Mother financially dependent.

Motivated by upward mobility.

Daniel was not merely a conspirator.

He had been chosen because he could be controlled.

That did not reduce his guilt.

It explained Crownstone’s strategy.

Maya confronted Daniel with the contract.

He stopped denying.

“I was supposed to make an introduction.”

“To whom?” Maya asked.

“Emily.”

“By marrying her?”

“No.”

“Then why was your compensation linked to voting control?”

“That changed later.”

“When?”

“After we got serious.”

“So you met Emily as part of a paid Crownstone project.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Emily watched.

She did not cry.

Not yet.

“Did you fall in love with her?” Maya asked.

He looked toward the one-way glass.

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

There was almost nothing worse he could have said.

“Then why continue?”

“I thought I could satisfy Adrian without hurting her.”

“By stealing control of her company?”

“I told myself it would be temporary.”

There it was again.

Return it later.

Fix it later.

Explain later.

“Who introduced you to Adrian?”

“My mother.”

Emily opened her eyes.

Evelyn.

Maya asked:

“How long has Evelyn known Adrian?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Years.”

“Why?”

“My father did business with Crownstone.”

“What kind?”

“Construction.”

Victor’s shell companies.

Hawthorne Ridge.

The connection predated Emily.

Evelyn’s lifestyle had been unstable for years.

Her late husband left debts, not wealth.

Daniel helped maintain the illusion.

Then Adrian offered a route into the Bennett fortune.

“Did Evelyn know you were approaching Emily intentionally?”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

Emily finally cried.

Not loudly.

One tear.

Then another.

Sarah put a hand over hers.

Daniel continued.

“At first, Mom wanted me to meet you. That’s all.”

“Then?”

“When we got engaged, Adrian said the Bennett trust was more protected than expected.”

“So he needed marriage.”

“Yes.”

“And after marriage?”

“He discovered the prenup blocked almost everything.”

“So you signed it knowing you planned to attack it later.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I wanted out of the deal.”

“Then why not tell Emily?”

“Adrian threatened to expose how we met.”

Emily whispered:

“So he protected the lie by creating bigger lies.”

Maya asked:

“Why didn’t you walk away?”

Daniel looked toward the camera.

“Because by then Mom owed Crownstone six million dollars.”

Evelyn’s debts.

The hidden engine.

Before Hawthorne Ridge, she had borrowed against failing projects.

Adrian rolled the debts together.

Then increased them.

Every rescue required another favor.

Daniel became the payment.

Emily became the asset.

The investigators searched Evelyn’s financial history.

Her ten-thousand-dollar allowance had not funded only luxury.

Part of it serviced secret debt.

She was using Emily’s money to make payments to Crownstone.

A financial loop.

Emily had unknowingly funded the leverage being used against her.

Then Sarah discovered a particularly strange payment.

Every month, Evelyn transferred $2,500 from her allowance into an account labeled:

J.B. RESERVE.

James Bennett?

Emily frowned.

“My father?”

The account existed before James died.

Adrian was a beneficiary.

So was someone else.

Nathan Cole.

Maya brought Nathan back.

“What is J.B. Reserve?”

Nathan looked pale.

“James Bennett Reserve.”

“What for?”

Nathan hesitated.

“An old settlement.”

“With Adrian Vale?”

“Yes.”

Emily leaned toward the screen.

“What settlement?”

Nathan looked directly toward the camera.

“Your father paid Adrian to stay away from Bennett Holdings.”

Emily stared.

“Why?”

Nathan lowered his voice.

May you like

“Because Adrian once claimed he owned part of it.”

👉 James Bennett had secretly paid Adrian Vale years ago to abandon a claim against Bennett Holdings—suggesting Crownstone’s attack on Emily began long before Daniel entered her life.
