Chapter 1

I Came Home Early And Found My Wife Forcing My Six-Year-Old Daughter’s Face Toward A Bucket Of Dirty Mop Water—Then My Little Girl Looked At Me Through Tears And Said, “Daddy, She Said You’d Never Believe Me.”

I got home before sunset because my meeting in Dallas was canceled.

The house was too quiet.

Then I heard a scream from the laundry room.

“Please, stop!”

I ran in and saw my wife, Jenna, gripping my daughter Lily by the hair.

She was forcing Lily’s face down toward a gray bucket filled with filthy mop water.

“What are you doing?” I shouted.

Jenna jerked backward so fast the bucket tipped and spilled across the floor.

Lily stumbled into the wall, sobbing.

Jenna’s face went white.

“She was being disrespectful.”

I pulled Lily into my arms, and she flinched the second my hand touched her shoulder.

That was when I saw the bruises.

Dark fingerprints marked her upper arm.

There was another yellowing bruise near her collarbone.

My stomach dropped.

“Who did this to you?”

Lily buried her face in my shirt.

Jenna answered first.

“She falls all the time, Mark.”

Lily shook her head.

“No, Daddy.”

Jenna stepped closer.

“She’s upset because I took away her tablet.”

I knelt to look at Lily, and that was when I saw the red mark along her cheek.

“Tell me the truth.”

Lily’s lips trembled.

“She dunks my toys in the bucket when I cry.”

Jenna snapped, “She is lying!”

Then Lily whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“She said Mommy did the same thing before she died.”

I slowly stood up.

My first wife, Claire, had died two years earlier.

Jenna had always called it a tragic fall in the garage.

“Repeat that,” I said.

Jenna grabbed my arm.

“Mark, she’s confused.”

Lily started crying harder.

“She said if I told you, I would end up like Mommy in the freezer room.”

There was no freezer room in our house.

At least, not one I knew about.

Then I heard a dull banging sound from behind the locked pantry door.

Jenna’s nails dug into my wrist as she whispered, “Don’t open that.”
