Chapter 15

The Cole family farm had been abandoned for twenty years.

Claire spent summers there as a child.

Robert sold the land after a worker disappeared.

The missing woman was Vivian’s younger sister, Laura Mercer.

According to Jenna, Laura discovered Vivian stealing from Robert.

She threatened to expose the affair and the pregnancy.

Then she vanished.

Robert believed Vivian harmed her.

He converted the storm shelter beneath the farmhouse into a hidden medical room after finding Laura injured.

“He tried to save her,” Jenna said from the hospital.

“What happened?”

“Vivian reached her first.”

“Is Laura dead?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why would Vivian take Claire there?”

“Because that is where my mother learned she could make a person disappear.”

Police reached the farm after dark.

The house had no electricity.

An underground generator powered one section.

Thermal cameras detected two people below.

Vivian.

And another body on a bed.

Claire was still protected at the hospital.

The person below could not be her.

Mom remained in custody.

Megan was safe.

Torres entered with tactical officers.

I stayed outside beside Lily’s secure vehicle.

Then Lily pointed toward the farmhouse window.

“Mommy.”

A woman stood behind the glass.

Claire.

The hospital room had been empty for at least thirty minutes.

Vivian’s people had created a false fire alarm and moved Claire through a laundry corridor.

The woman in the window lifted one hand.

Then disappeared.

I ran toward the house.

Torres shouted for me to stop.

A gunshot came from below.

Officers entered.

I followed behind them despite every order.

The hidden stairway opened beneath the kitchen.

Vivian stood near a hospital bed.

Claire lay strapped to it.

A second older woman sat in a wheelchair against the wall.

Her hair was white.

Her face was heavily scarred.

Laura Mercer.

Alive.

Vivian held a gun against Claire’s chest.

“You brought police,” she said.

“You kidnapped her again.”

“She is my sister’s jailer.”

Laura made a weak sound.

Vivian pointed toward her.

“Robert kept Laura beneath this house.”

Laura struggled to speak.

“No.”

Vivian ignored her.

“He wanted to hide what he had done.”

“What did he do?”

Laura forced out two words.

“She did.”

Vivian’s face twisted.

Laura pointed at her sister.

“Vivian.”

Torres ordered Vivian to drop the gun.

She pressed it harder against Claire.

“The company was mine before Robert touched me.”

“You chose to work for him.”

“He promised marriage.”

“He was already married.”

“He promised Jenna would have his name.”

“Then he changed his mind after learning what you did.”

Vivian looked toward Laura.

“She betrayed me.”

Laura’s damaged voice became clearer.

“I found the poison.”

Vivian had been slowly poisoning Robert years before his actual death.

Laura warned him.

Vivian attacked her and left her at the farm.

Robert found Laura and hid her while seeking evidence.

He feared Vivian had allies in the police.

Before he could expose her, Vivian took Laura and moved her through private facilities.

For twenty years, Laura had been alive under false names.

The same method later used on Claire.

“You learned nothing new with my wife,” I said. “You repeated what worked.”

Vivian smiled.

“People believe paperwork more than frightened women.”

Claire’s eyes opened.

She looked at Vivian.

Then at me.

Her hand moved against the restraint.

Three taps.

I’m listening.

Torres shifted behind a support beam.

Vivian noticed.

She aimed toward the officers.

Claire pulled her restrained arm hard.

The bed rail broke loose.

It struck Vivian’s wrist.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

I reached Claire.

Torres tackled Vivian.

Laura’s wheelchair rolled toward the stairs.

Lily appeared at the bottom.

She had escaped the vehicle and followed Megan inside.

“Daddy!”

The chair nearly struck her.

Megan grabbed Lily and pulled her back.

Vivian saw my daughter.

Even beneath three officers, she began laughing.

“You still think the little girl is the prize.”

“No,” I said. “She is a person.”

Vivian stopped laughing.

That distinction had never existed for her.

Claire was taken to the hospital.

Laura went with her under another medical team.

Vivian was returned to federal custody.

Jenna surrendered formally after surgery.

She gave prosecutors every message, account and location she knew.

Ryan and Mom remained jailed.

Harold and Judge Mercer agreed to cooperate.

The conspiracy had finally become a complete record.

Then Claire’s doctor called me into a private room.

Her new scans showed damage consistent with repeated oxygen deprivation.

The dirty-water assaults had not only terrified her.

They had worsened her brain injury.

Some memory and movement might never return.

I sat beside her bed.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire looked at me.

Then she touched the communication board.

N-O M-O-R-E S-O-R-R-Y.

I waited.

She pointed again.

L-I-S-T-E-N.
