Chapter 14

Harold Pierce denied involvement.

He claimed someone stole his credentials.

Then investigators found payments from Vivian’s shell companies to his private foundation.

Harold had approved the fake transport.

He also approved the ambulance used the night Claire fell.

Claire’s own godfather helped erase her.

Police searched his estate.

He disappeared before they arrived.

His wife said he left after receiving a call from Jenna’s attorney.

The company board suspended him.

I returned to Cole Cold Storage for an emergency meeting.

For two years, I had treated the company as something to preserve for Lily.

Now every hallway felt contaminated.

People Claire trusted had used her business to hide her.

The board voted to place all operations under an outside administrator.

I supported it.

Claire’s shares belonged to her because she was alive.

Until she recovered enough to decide, nobody in our family would control them.

Vivian’s attorney challenged the decision.

Jenna challenged it.

Ryan’s attorney challenged it.

Everyone described the company as if it were the injured person.

Claire was the injured person.

The company was only what they used to justify hurting her.

Harold contacted me through an encrypted call.

“I can help you end this.”

“Turn yourself in.”

“Vivian has documents that could destroy Claire.”

“What documents?”

“Medical files showing she signed away Lily’s custody.”

“Forged.”

“Not all of them.”

“What do you want?”

“Safe passage.”

“You helped kidnap my wife.”

“I helped move a patient I was told would not recover.”

“You attended her funeral.”

Harold looked away.

“I made terrible choices.”

“You kept making them.”

He offered Vivian’s current communication network.

She had bribed a jail medical contractor to carry messages.

Those messages directed Harold to arrange Claire’s second abduction.

He claimed he agreed because Vivian possessed proof he embezzled from Robert Cole for decades.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Where Robert first met Vivian.”

An abandoned roadside motel north of Atlanta.

Police surrounded it.

Harold occupied Room 12.

He surrendered.

Inside his suitcase were Vivian’s messages and an old audio recorder.

The recording captured Robert Cole speaking to Vivian before his death.

“I will recognize Jenna,” he said. “But you will not control her trust.”

Vivian answered, “You cannot leave Claire everything after what you promised me.”

“I am not.”

“You’re leaving Jenna a cage.”

“I’m protecting her from you.”

A crash followed.

Then Robert gasped.

The recording ended.

Robert’s death had been ruled a heart attack.

Harold admitted Vivian asked him to erase security footage from the office that day.

A preserved blood sample was located.

Testing found the same sedative used on Claire.

Vivian had likely killed Claire’s father too.

The inheritance war began with murder.

Harold also revealed Vivian’s final outside ally.

District Judge Alan Mercer.

Dr. Mercer’s older brother.

Judge Mercer had signed the false custody petition against me.

He approved Jenna’s release.

He authorized the forged medical order moving Claire.

The conspiracy reached the court.

Federal agents arrested him.

Inside his chambers, they found sealed family files.

One contained a petition transferring Lily’s guardianship to Vivian if Jenna died or became unavailable.

Another declared Claire legally dead despite new evidence.

Judge Mercer had planned to erase her a second time through paperwork.

The arrests should have ended Vivian’s power.

Instead, a riot began inside the county jail.

Smoke filled one wing.

Cell doors opened through a hacked control panel.

Vivian disappeared during evacuation.

So did Jenna.

Security footage showed them wearing medical uniforms.

A vehicle waited behind the jail.

The driver was Harold’s wife.

Police found the vehicle abandoned near a rail yard.

Inside was Jenna’s uniform.

Blood stained the passenger seat.

Vivian had left without her daughter.

A note rested beneath the steering wheel.

JENNA WAS NEVER STRONG ENOUGH.

Jenna called me from a nearby gas station.

She was injured.

Her mother had stabbed her when she refused to continue.

“Vivian took Lily’s school file,” Jenna whispered.

“Lily is under protection.”

“She does not want Lily.”

“Then what does she want?”

“Claire.”

“Where is Vivian going?”

“The old Cole family farm.”

“Why?”

“Robert built a private medical room beneath the house when Claire was a child.”

“What for?”

May you like

Jenna began crying.

“He was trying to hide my mother’s first victim.”
