Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm

"Who is responsible for this child?" the officer demanded, his hand resting instinctively near his utility belt as his eyes scanned the gravel driveway.

My mother stepped off the porch first, her pale blue blouse catching the morning light, her pearls swinging lightly. She wore an expression of profound, theatrical grief. "Officer, thank God you're here! It’s my granddaughter. She must have wandered out of the house while we were preparing for a family gathering. We’ve been searching everywhere!"
"She didn't wander, Mom," I said, my voice dangerously calm as Marcus helped me stand up, his arms holding Lily wrapped tightly in his jacket. "Vanessa told me to check the waste. You knew she was in there."
Vanessa’s face hardened. She took a step forward, pulling her daughter Emma behind her. "Don't be ridiculous, Chloe. It was a joke! I thought she was playing hide-and-seek. How was I supposed to know she was actually in the dumpster?"
The paramedic who had been examining Lily looked up, his expression grim. "Officer, we need to transport this child immediately. This isn't just an accident or a game of hide-and-seek. Her pupils are pinpoint, her respirations are shallow, and there’s a distinct chemical residue around her lips. She’s been heavily drugged."

The word hit the driveway like a physical blow. Drugged.
Marcus’s grip tightened around Lily. He looked at my father, then at my mother, his eyes burning with a lethal intensity. "What did you do to her?"

My father, Raymond, finally spoke, his deep, authoritative voice cutting through the panic. "We didn't do anything. This girl has always been unstable, Officer," he said, pointing a finger at me. "She got pregnant at eighteen, she’s been a financial drain, and she’s probably negligent. If the child ingested something, it was under Chloe's watch."
"Sir, nobody moves," the lead officer commanded, pointing toward the porch. "Backup is on the way. This area is now a crime scene."
