Chapter 4: The Unraveling

Detective Miller walked out of the front door of the house, carrying a laptop and a stack of financial documents seized from my father's home office. Behind him, two officers escorted Vanessa and my mother in handcuffs.
"Chloe!" my mother screamed, her face contorted in rage, her carefully styled hair completely ruined by the humidity. "Tell them to stop this! You're destroying this family over nothing! We did everything for you! We gave you a roof over your head!"

"You poisoned my daughter, Mom," I said, stepping into her path, looking her dead in the eye. "You poisoned her, threw her in a commercial dumpster like she was garbage, all so you could steal the money my grandfather left her."
Vanessa panicked, turning on her mother instantly. "It was her idea! Officer, listen to me! Mom was the one who put the sedative in Lily's juice box last night!
