Chapter 5: The Erasure of Debt

The trial of the Vance-Sterling family became a media circus, but Marcus and I refused to let it touch our daughter. With the immense resources of Marcus's family and the independent trust fund that was officially unlocked for Lily’s protection, we hired the most ruthless federal prosecutors in the state.

The medical evidence was undeniable. The cherry-red syringe carried Victoria’s fingerprints. The emails proved criminal conspiracy, child endangerment, and attempted grand larceny.
Six months later, the final sentences were handed down.
Victoria and Raymond were sentenced to fifteen years in a maximum-security state facility, their assets seized to pay for the legal fees and the restitution of the trust fund they had tried to steal. Vanessa received an eight-year sentence for her compliance and conspiracy, her daughter Emma placed under the temporary custody of her biological father, far away from the toxic influence of the suburban house.
The morning after the sentencing, Marcus and I stood in the empty driveway of my parents' old home. The bank had foreclosed on the property to satisfy the legal debts, and a heavy yellow demolition crane sat in the front yard.
"Are you ready?" Marcus asked, holding a remote control device connected to the demolition team’s main console.

I looked at the house—the place that had symbolized my shame, my isolation, and almost the death of my child. "Press it."
Marcus clicked the button. With a deafening, metallic roar, the massive iron wrecking ball swung forward, smashing through the front brick facade, bringing the crystal chandeliers, the painted walls, and the artificial perfection crumbling down into a heap of useless dust.
