Part 19: What Cannot Be Returned

Jamie was asleep when Ethan finally spoke.

“I don’t know what to do with this.”

Sarah looked at the letters.

“You don’t have to do anything.”

“That feels wrong.”

“Why?”

“Because they explain things.”

“And?”

“And explanations make things complicated.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

“But they don’t undo them.”

Silence.

Ethan sat on the floor, back against the couch.

“I spent years wanting answers.”

“Now I have them.”

“And?”

“And I don’t feel what I expected.”

Sarah looked at him gently.

“What did you expect?”

“Closure.”

She smiled softly.

“That’s not something you receive.”

“What is it then?”

“It’s something you choose to stop chasing.”

Later that night, Ethan placed the letters back in the envelope.

He did not throw them away.

He did not send them.

He placed them inside the journal.

Then closed it.

Not forgiveness.

Not rejection.

Just placement.

A life file closed but not erased.
