Chapter 27 — Becoming

Spring returned.

Again.

The lake shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.

The same pier.

The same breeze.

The same family.

Different people.

Jamie skipped stones across the water.

He had finally learned to make them bounce.

"Five!"

he shouted proudly.

Ethan clapped.

Sarah laughed.

"You've been practicing."

"A lot."

Jamie looked at them.

"Do you think we'll come back here when I'm grown up?"

Ethan answered without hesitation.

"I hope so."

"And if we don't?"

Sarah smiled.

"Then you'll find another place."

"Will it feel the same?"

She looked across the water before answering.

"No."

"It'll feel like the next chapter."

Jamie seemed satisfied with that.

The three of them sat together until sunset painted the lake gold.

Nobody rushed home.

Nobody worried about tomorrow.

For a while,

the world asked nothing of them.

And they discovered something beautiful.

Healing had never been the destination.

It had quietly become the way they lived.

The story had never really been about escaping the past.

It had always been about learning that love,

when chosen again and again,

May you like

could become a home.

The End.
