Chapter 10 - THE HUDSON RIVER WAREHOUSE

-2-

The old Hudson River industrial docks were a sprawling maze of abandoned brick warehouses, rusted shipping containers, and rotting wooden piers stretching out into the dark, churning grey waters of the river. It was a ghost town of forgotten manufacturing dreams, perfectly suited for illicit deals and desperate kidnappings.

The matte-black Ford Transit van bounced along the rutted gravel road before skidding to a halt beside Warehouse Building 4—a massive, corrugated metal structure with broken windows and overgrown weeds choking its foundation.

Two burly men in dark suits hopped out of the front cab, wrenching open the rear doors. Grace stumbled out onto the concrete, clutching Lily tightly to her chest, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

“Move it!” one of the guards barked, shoving Grace roughly between the shoulder blades and forcing her forward toward the rusted sliding metal door of the warehouse.

They stepped inside into the cavernous, freezing interior of the building. In the center of the open floor, illuminated by a single dangling work light overhead, stood Victoria. She wasn't crying anymore. Her face was set in a mask of cold, unyielding malice, her manicured hands folded neatly over the front of her black coat.

“Well, well, well,” Victoria purred, stepping forward slowly as her heels clicked sharply against the concrete floor. “The runaway maid and her little golden ticket. Did you really think you could hide from my family just because Nathan waved a few legal papers in a boardroom?”

Grace pressed Lily’s face hard against her shoulder, glaring at Victoria with eyes burning with fierce defiance. “You’re insane, Victoria. Nathan already destroyed your father’s stock majority. The board has turned on you. Keeping us here won't save your family empire.”

Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that echoed off the metal rafters. “My family empire is already dead, Grace! Do you understand that? My father called me from the corporate boardroom twenty minutes ago—Nathan destroyed everything we built in a single morning! And do you know who is going to pay the price for that destruction?”

Victoria stepped closer, reaching out to roughly grab a handful of Lily’s hair. Lily let out a sharp, terrified shriek.

“Stop it!” Grace screamed, lunging forward to push Victoria away, but the two guards instantly grabbed Grace’s arms, twisting them behind her back and forcing her down onto her knees on the cold concrete floor.

“Let her go! Please don't hurt her!” Grace wept, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks as she stared up at Victoria with utter desperation.

Victoria pulled a heavy, chrome-plated revolver from her coat pocket, casually flicking off the safety catch with her thumb and pointing the barrel directly at Lily’s forehead.

“Nathan is on his way,” Victoria whispered, a manic smile spreading across her lips. “I sent him an anonymous GPS ping right after we grabbed you from the estate. When he arrives, he’s going to watch his precious daughter and his little maid take their final breaths before I put a bullet through his own heart. We all go down together, Grace.”

Before Victoria could pull the hammer back, a deafening explosion shattered the heavy metal doors of the warehouse off their industrial hinges.

A sleek black Maybach roared directly through the opening, crashing through the wreckage of the doors and skidding across the concrete floor before slamming to a halt right in front of them, headlights blazing like the eyes of an angry god.

The driver's side door flew open instantly, and Nathan stepped out into the freezing warehouse, his eyes locked entirely on the gun pointed at his daughter's head.
