Chapter 9 - THE EMPTY NEST

-2-

The black Maybach tore through the wrought-iron gates of the Cole estate just twenty minutes later, tires screeching against the gravel as Nathan slammed on the brakes before the grand front steps. He didn't wait for the car to fully stop; he threw open the door and sprinted up the stone steps, throwing his weight against the heavy oak front door.

“Grace?!” Nathan called out, his voice echoing through the vast, empty foyer.

No answer.

The silence of the mansion felt different this time—not the peaceful, domestic quiet of a lazy morning, but the hollow, suffocating vacuum of an abandoned house.

Nathan raced through the foyer toward the grand staircase, taking the steps three at a time until he reached the second-floor hallway. He threw open the door to the master suite where Grace and Lily had been staying.

The room was pristine, the bed neatly made, but the small backpack Lily had brought with her was sitting abandoned on the edge of the mattress. Resting right beside it was a single piece of white hotel stationery with handwritten words scrawled in Grace’s familiar, hurried handwriting:

“Nathan—I’m sorry. I can’t let my past destroy your future. Victoria’s brothers tracked us down fifteen minutes after you left for downtown. If I stay, they will use Lily to break you completely. Don't look for us. We’re going somewhere safe.”

Nathan’s breath caught in his throat. The paper fluttered from his trembling fingers, drifting down to land softly on the hardwood floor.

Fifteen minutes after you left.

He spun around, sprinting down the hallway toward the private security monitoring station near the east wing. The primary server screens were dark, but the analog backup monitor wired directly into the perimeter motion sensors was still blinking green.

Nathan slammed his fist onto the keyboard, bringing up the exterior driveway playback logs from 9:15 a.m.

The video feed flickered to life. On the screen, a matte-black unmarked cargo van pulled up right beside the side entrance of the estate. Two men in dark suits—men bearing the unmistakable insignia of the Vance private security detail—forced open the side door. Grace emerged, holding a terrified, screaming Lily in her arms, trying to shield her face from the harsh morning light as the men shoved them both roughly into the back of the van before tires squealed and the vehicle vanished down the private road.

Nathan’s vision turned completely black with rage. He slammed his fist into the reinforced glass of the monitor screen, shattering the display into a thousand spiderweb cracks while blood dripped unnoticed from his knuckles.

They had taken his daughter. They had taken Grace.

He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a direct emergency number with blinding speed.

“Viktor,” Nathan barked the second the call connected, his voice trembling with a terrifying, unhinged fury. “Drop everything. Track every traffic camera in the tristate area for a matte-black Ford Transit van heading north toward the old Hudson River industrial docks. If they leave state lines before I get there... burn the bridge.”
