Chapter 4 - THE FABRICATED CHARGES

-2-
The heavy oak double doors of the Cole estate study burst open without warning. Four uniformed police officers swarmed into the room, their hands resting cautiously on their holstered sidearms. Stepping briskly behind them was Captain Thomas Miller, a veteran precinct commander whose glossy leather belt and chest ribbons spoke of decades in the city’s pocket. Trailing just behind the captain, dabbing dramatically at the corners of her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief, was Victoria. Her white designer dress was gone, replaced by an austere black mourning suit that screamed manufactured tragedy.
“Nathan!” Victoria wailed, rushing forward with theatrical desperation, though she stopped short when she encountered the cold, impenetrable wall of Nathan’s glare. “Thank God the police arrived in time! She was going to kill me—this woman, this criminal! She attacked me with a kitchen knife when I caught her trying to steal the family heirlooms and abduct your late brother’s orphaned niece!”
The sheer audacity of the lie hung in the air like foul gas. Grace instinctively pulled Lily behind her skirt, her eyes narrowing as she stared at Victoria with absolute contempt.
Captain Miller stepped forward, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket and snapping it open with a sharp rustle. He didn't look at Grace; his eyes were fixed entirely on Nathan, holding a practiced expression of official sympathy. “Mr. Cole, I’m sorry about this domestic disturbance, but we have an active bench warrant issued by a municipal judge thirty minutes ago. The charge is aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping of a minor, and corporate espionage. The suspect, Grace Miller—no relation to me—is being taken into custody immediately.”
Nathan didn't move. He stood tall beside his desk, his hands clasped loosely behind his back, exuding an aura of absolute, controlled menace. “There is no kidnapping, Captain. The child is my biological daughter, and DNA verification will be established by sunset. As for the assault charge, my estate’s internal security cameras recorded the entire incident from four separate angles: Victoria initiated the physical attack with a hockey stick against an unarmed maid. Your warrant is based on perjured testimony.”
Captain Miller’s face tightened slightly, a flicker of genuine panic crossing his eyes before he masked it behind official protocol. “Mr. Cole, my orders come directly from the District Attorney’s office, backed by an affidavit signed under oath by Miss Vance. The security server here was reported hacked and wiped remotely twenty minutes ago. As far as the court is concerned, those video files do not exist.”
Nathan’s heart skipped a beat. Wiped remotely. Marcus Vance. The moment Marcus stormed out of the study, he must have used his master administrator credentials to purge the estate’s cloud backup servers from his car phone. They had completely cut off his digital defenses in a matter of minutes.
“Nathan!” Victoria cried out, stepping closer with a sickeningly sweet, victorious smirk hidden just beneath her tear-stained facade. “You can’t fight the entire system. My family built this city with yours. Just let the police take her away quietly. We can pretend none of this ever happened, and we can still be married in two weeks. We’ll send the brat away to a boarding school in Switzerland.”
Grace gasped, dropping to her knees to scoop Lily into her arms, pressing the little girl’s face hard against her shoulder so she wouldn't see the cold steel of the handcuffs the officers were unhooking from their belts. “Don't touch her!” Grace screamed, her voice cracking with maternal terror. “Nathan, please! Don't let them take her!”
Two officers stepped forward, grabbing Grace roughly by the arms and hauling her to her feet despite her fierce, desperate struggles. Lily began to wriek with terror, clutching wildly at Grace’s sweater as she was dragged toward the doorway.
Nathan’s vision turned a violent shade of red. The restraint he had practiced his entire life snapped. He lunged forward, his fist clenching, ready to tear through the entire tactical squad to reach his daughter, when a sharp, familiar voice cut through the chaos of the room like a gunshot.
“I wouldn't do that if I were you, Mr. Cole.”
A tall, silver-haired man stepped out from the shadows of the hallway corridor. It was Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner of Sterling & Cole Legal Group—the oldest, most ruthless corporate law firm on the East Branch, and the man who had served as Nathan’s late father’s shadow for thirty years. Arthur held a thick, manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing the personal family crest of the Cole dynasty.
Nathan stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting to the envelope. “Arthur... what is this?”
May you like
Arthur stepped into the center of the room, ignoring the police officers and fixing his cold, calculating eyes entirely on Nathan. He slowly extended the envelope toward him, whispering four words that stopped the entire world in its tracks:
“Your father is watching.”
