Chapter 2 - The Iron Cage of Wealth

The aftermath of that night was an explosion of public scandal. Mark wasn't just an ordinary abuser; he was a senior partner at Montgomery & Associates, one of the most prestigious corporate law firms in the state. His family’s wealth was an iron cage that had protected them from consequences for generations.

Within twenty-four hours of his arrest, Mark’s father, Arthur Montgomery—a billionaire real estate mogul who spent most of his time in Europe—flew back into the country.

I was staying at my father’s quiet farmhouse in Columbus, sitting by the fireplace with a cup of tea, when the front gate camera chimed. A sleek black limousine had pulled up to the gravel driveway.

Arthur Montgomery stepped out, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire he was. He didn't look angry; he looked transactional.

My father opened the door before Arthur could knock. "You're not welcome on my property, Arthur."

"Robert, let’s be reasonable," Arthur said, his voice deep and smooth, the tone of a man used to buying his way out of any problem. "What Mark did was deplorable. I’ve already stripped him of his partnership at the firm. But a public trial? A felony conviction? It will ruin the family name. It will tank our stock values."

Arthur reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a leather checkbook. He laid it on the table.

"Five million dollars, Emily," Arthur said, looking past my father to meet my eyes. "In a private trust. You divorce him, you walk away, and you never speak to the media. You state under oath that the incident was a misunderstanding caused by a bad reaction to medication. You can buy a mansion anywhere in the world. Just let my son go."

The sheer volume of the money made my breath hitch for a fraction of a second. Five million dollars. It was enough to ensure I never had to work another day in my life.

But then I felt the faint, throbbing pain in my left cheek, where the bruise was finally beginning to yellow. I remembered the nights I had slept on the bathroom floor because I was too terrified to close my eyes in our bed.

I stood up and walked to the door. I picked up the checkbook and dropped it into Arthur’s hands.

"Your son told my father that he slapped me to 'help get my head straight,'" I said, looking him dead in the eye. "So consider this my head being perfectly straight, Mr. Montgomery. Keep your money. I want the trial."

Arthur’s face hardened, the polite facade dropping away to reveal the predator beneath. "You’re making a catastrophic mistake, girl. My family owns the judges in this county. We own the media. By the time my legal team is done with you, the public will think you’re a unstable, gold-digging psychotic who bruised her own face to frame an innocent man."

"Let them try," my father said, stepping between us, his stature imposing. "I built the criminal justice framework in this state, Arthur. If you try to buy a single juror, I will ensure you spend your retirement in a federal penitentiary right next to your son. Get off my land."

As the limousine tore down the driveway, leaving a cloud of dust behind, my father turned to me. "It’s going to be a war, Emily. They will dig up everything. Every argument you ever had, every medical record. Are you ready?"

I looked at the blue birthday present he had brought me, still sitting unopened on the counter. "I’ve been hiding in the dark for three years, Dad. I'm ready for the light."
