Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Crumbles

The trial began three weeks later. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with reporters, high-society families, and curious onlookers.

Mark sat at the defense table, dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, looking clean-cut and completely confident. He gave a small, mocking nod to me as I walked into the room. Beside him sat Diane, draped in dark silk, looking like a grieving queen.

Caleb Vance, the defense attorney, started his opening statement by painting a picture of a devoted, hardworking husband pushed to the brink by an emotionally unstable wife. He presented medical records from a year ago when I had visited the ER for a sprained wrist, claiming I had told the doctor I was clumsy.

But then, it was the prosecution’s turn.

David Vance stood up, looking calm and entirely unbothered by the defense's grandstanding. He didn't make a long speech. He simply turned on the courtroom projector.

"The defense claims Mrs. Montgomery is prone to accidents," David said smoothly. "Let's look at the house’s own internal accounting of those accidents."

The large screen flickered to life. It was the footage from the encrypted hard drive Diane had tried to pull from the kitchen cabinet on my birthday.

The courtroom went completely silent. The video didn't just show the morning of my birthday; it contained months of recorded footage that the hidden camera system had automatically backed up.

The first clip showed Mark slamming me against the refrigerator six months ago because dinner was cold. The second clip showed Diane standing in the background, casually drinking a glass of wine while her son screamed in my face, completely ignoring my pleas for help. The final clip was from the morning of my birthday: Mark striking me across the face, the sound of the slap echoing through the courtroom speakers like a whip crack, followed by his cruel laughter.

"No!" Diane screamed from the gallery, standing up, her face twisted in horror. "That footage was deleted! It was supposed to be encrypted!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Montgomery!" the judge barked, banging his gavel.

Mark’s confident smile dissolved into a mask of pure panic. He looked at his lawyer, but Caleb Vance was already looking down at his notepad, his expression grim. He knew the case was over.

But David wasn't done. He pulled out a second piece of evidence—the video file sent to my phone from the jail.

"Furthermore, Your Honor, the defendant has continued to terrorize the victim from inside his cell, using a smuggled cellular device to threaten the safety of her property and loved ones. We ask for immediate revocation of bail and an upgrade of charges to include felony coercion."

The jury looked at Mark with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust. The carefully constructed image of the wealthy, perfect Beverly Hills family had collapsed into a pile of ash in less than an hour.
