Chapter 5 - The Verdict of Justice

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When they walked back into the courtroom, the tension was so thick it felt heavy in the air. I held my father’s hand, my knuckles turning white. Mark was sweating through his expensive shirt, his hands trembling as he stood to face the verdict.

"On the first count of felony domestic assault, how do you find?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

"On the second count of witness intimidation?"

"Guilty."

"On the count of felony coercion?"

"Guilty."

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Mark collapsed back into his chair, his head in his hands. Diane began to weep hysterically, reaching out toward her son as the baliffs stepped forward to take him away.

The judge didn't show an ounce of mercy. "Mark Montgomery, your actions demonstrate a complete lack of humanity, aggravated by a systemic attempt to use your family’s wealth to obstruct justice. I sentence you to twelve years at the state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first eight."

As Mark was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs, he looked at me one last time. There was no rage left in his eyes—only the cold, terrifying realization that his money couldn't save him from the reality of what he had done.

Diane was arrested right outside the courtroom doors, charged with obstruction of justice and destroying evidence. As the police led her away, her gold bracelets clinked against the metal handcuffs—a perfect, poetic echo of the sound she had made while crawling across my kitchen floor.

When the courtroom cleared, I stood in the hallway with my father. For the first time in three years, the phantom weight on my chest was completely gone. I breathed in deeply, the air tasting clean and sweet.

"You did it, Emily," my father said, a tear of pride glistening in his eye.

"We did it, Dad," I replied, throwing my arms around his neck.
