CHAPTER 4 – The Secret in the Basement

CHAPTER 4 – The Secret in the Basement

Ava's ambulance had already disappeared toward the hospital when another detective approached me outside.

"Mrs. Parker..."

"We've obtained emergency authorization to search the residence."

My mother nearly laughed.

"Search?"

"For what?"

The detective didn't answer.

Instead, officers began moving through every room.

Harold paced the living room, muttering under his breath.

"This is ridiculous."

"You can't search someone's house over one accident."

The lead investigator stopped.

"Sir."

"We're no longer investigating only today's incident."

His eyes settled on me.

"We're investigating decades of alleged child abuse."

The words landed like thunder.

My mother suddenly looked frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

I noticed it immediately.

She kept glancing toward the hallway.

Toward the basement door.

My heart skipped.

I hadn't been down there since I was eighteen.

Back then it had been called...

"The discipline room."

No one outside the family knew it existed.

An officer reached for the basement doorknob.

My father stepped forward.

"That's just storage."

The officer looked at him.

"Then you won't mind if we take a look."

Harold blocked the entrance.

For exactly three seconds.

Then two officers gently—but firmly—moved him aside.

The basement door creaked open.

Cold air drifted upward.

Dust floated through the flashlight beams.

I felt sick.

Every step they took echoed through memories I'd spent years trying to bury.

A minute passed.

Then another.

No one upstairs spoke.

Finally...

One detective called out.

"Captain..."

"You need to see this."

The investigators disappeared deeper into the basement.

When they returned, the captain's expression had completely changed.

"What did you find?" I asked quietly.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

"A locked cabinet."

"We forced it open."

Inside were dozens of neatly labeled videotapes.

Old camcorder cassettes.

Each marked with a date.

Each marked with one of three names.

Caleb.

Lauren.

Claire.

My blood ran cold.

I recognized my father's handwriting instantly.

The captain slowly held up one cassette.

Written across the label were four words that made my knees buckle.

"Lesson After Lying – Claire, Age 8."

No one spoke.

Even Harold had gone pale.

Then the detective added something even worse.

"There are journals too."

He flipped open one notebook.

Every page contained dates.

Punishments.

Reasons.

Durations.

Like records.

Like experiments.

My mother suddenly lunged toward the notebook.

"You can't read that!"

An officer stopped her.

The captain looked from the journals...

...to the videotapes...

...to Harold Bennett.

Then he quietly spoke the words every victim dreams of hearing.

"Harold Bennett..."

"You are under arrest."

Harold opened his mouth to protest—

But at that exact moment, another officer rushed in from outside, holding a phone.

"Captain!"

"The hospital just called."

May you like

"The little girl..."

"They've found something that changes this case completely."
