CHAPTER 5 – The Truth Beneath the Bruise

CHAPTER 5 – The Truth Beneath the Bruise
The entire room froze.
Every officer turned toward the young detective holding the phone.
"The hospital completed Ava's emergency CT scan," he said, breathing hard after running inside. "She's conscious."
For one glorious second, I couldn't breathe.
"She's awake?" I whispered.
The detective nodded.
"She's awake."
Relief crashed over me so suddenly my knees nearly gave out.
Then his expression darkened.
"But the doctors found something else."
The room fell silent again.
"The injury to the back of her head is consistent with a fall..."
He looked directly at the captain.
"...but there are fresh injuries on both of her upper arms."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The doctors believe someone grabbed her with significant force immediately before she fell."
My stomach twisted.
Grabbed her?
I replayed the scene in my mind.
The kitchen.
The soda can.
The belt.
Then a memory flashed across my thoughts.
Just before Harold removed his belt...
He had seized Ava's arm.
Hard.
She had cried out.
I hadn't thought anything of it in the chaos that followed.
Now it mattered.
It changed everything.
The captain turned toward Harold.
"Did you grab your granddaughter?"
Harold crossed his arms.
"I stopped her from stealing."
"She's three," I said quietly.
"She wasn't stealing."
"She was thirsty."
He scoffed.
"Children need consequences."
The captain's voice hardened.
"So you admit making physical contact?"
Harold hesitated.
"I... restrained her."
One detective immediately wrote the statement down.
Another officer read Harold his rights again, making it clear that anything further he said could be used against him.
My mother stepped forward, tears streaming down her face.
"This has gone too far."
"No," I answered.
"It didn't go too far today."
"It went too far thirty years ago."
Nobody defended her.
Not even Lauren.
Not anymore.
Three hours later, Ethan and I arrived at the children's hospital.
Ava looked impossibly small in the hospital bed.
Bandages wrapped around her head.
Tiny IV taped to her hand.
When she saw us, she reached out weakly.
"Mommy..."
I broke.
I buried my face beside hers and cried harder than I had since she was born.
"I'm so sorry."
"I'm so, so sorry."
She touched my cheek with her little fingers.
"I was good."
Those three words shattered me.
"I know, sweetheart."
"You did nothing wrong."
She searched my face.
"Grandpa was mad."
"Was it because I was bad?"
I swallowed against the lump in my throat.
"No."
"You were never bad."
"The grown-ups were."
Ethan quietly stepped outside the room.
A few moments later he returned with a pediatric social worker and a child psychologist.
The psychologist knelt beside Ava.
"Can you tell me what happened?"
Ava hesitated.
Then she whispered,
"Grandpa squeezed me."
She pointed to her arm.
"He said naughty girls get hurt."
Every word was recorded.
Every word mattered.
That evening, Detective Maria Ortiz entered the room carrying a thin evidence folder.
She looked at me carefully.
"I think you should prepare yourself."
"For what?"
"We reviewed one of the videotapes recovered from your parents' basement."
I felt every muscle in my body tense.
"You don't have to watch it."
"I do."
She hesitated before opening the folder.
"The tape shows your father forcing eight-year-old you to stand against a wall."
My heartbeat thundered.
"He repeatedly struck the wall beside your head with that same leather belt..."
"...while your mother operated the camera."
I closed my eyes.
I hadn't imagined it.
I hadn't exaggerated it.
It had happened.
And now...
It existed on video.
Detective Ortiz spoke gently.
"Claire..."
"You're no longer just a witness."
"You're a victim in an ongoing criminal investigation."
