CHAPTER 6 – The Family Turns Against Itself

CHAPTER 6 – The Family Turns Against Itself

By sunrise, the story had spread through the entire county.

Not because of the police.

Because several guests had uploaded short videos before investigators collected their phones.

The footage showed only seconds.

Harold holding the belt.

People screaming.

Paramedics rushing inside.

But it was enough.

The comments exploded.

"Who threatens a toddler?"

"Arrest him."

"Protect that little girl."

Reporters began gathering outside the courthouse before charges had even been filed.

Inside the hospital, however, something far more important was happening.

Caleb asked to see me.

I almost refused.

Almost.

He entered Ava's room looking ten years older than he had the day before.

"I don't expect forgiveness," he said quietly.

I remained silent.

He sat across from me.

"I lied."

"To the police."

"To therapists."

"To child protective services."

Every word felt heavier than the last.

"I thought if I protected Dad..."

"...he'd finally love me."

Tears filled his eyes.

"He never did."

I looked at my brother for a long time.

Then asked the question that had haunted me for decades.

"When he locked me in the basement..."

"...where were you?"

Caleb covered his face.

"Outside the door."

"I could hear you crying."

"But I was too scared to open it."

Neither of us spoke.

Some wounds had no immediate cure.

Then he reached into his backpack.

"I brought something."

He placed an old metal box on the table.

"I stole this from Dad's office fifteen years ago."

My pulse quickened.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Insurance policies.

Bank records.

Letters.

And one sealed envelope labeled in my father's handwriting:

"Destroy if anyone investigates."

Detective Ortiz arrived less than twenty minutes later.

She carefully opened the envelope while all of us watched.

Inside were handwritten statements.

Witness coaching notes.

Draft explanations for bruises.

Lists of neighbors considered "unsafe."

Even more disturbing...

There was a checklist titled:

"How to keep children loyal."

The detective slowly turned each page.

Nobody in the room spoke.

Finally she looked up.

"This isn't just evidence of abuse."

She closed the folder.

"This suggests a long-term pattern of intimidation and obstruction."

Before anyone could respond, another officer rushed into the room.

"Detective!"

"We just received the forensic results from the basement journals."

Ortiz stood immediately.

"What did they find?"

The officer looked directly at me.

"Someone besides Harold wrote in those journals."

I frowned.

"My mother?"

He slowly shook his head.

"No."

He took a deep breath.

"The handwriting belongs to..."

Lauren.

My sister hadn't merely defended our parents.

According to the forensic examiner...

She had been helping document the punishments for years.

And at that moment, across town, officers were already on their way to her house.
