Part 4

Tomaso did not flinch at her anger.

He deserved it.

He knew he deserved every bit of her wrath.

"I am not lying," Tomaso said, his voice deadly calm.

"Your sister drugged me."

Lucia froze.

The room became completely still.

"What?" she whispered.

"Sofia put something in my drink during the family dinner," Tomaso explained.

"By the time I walked upstairs, I couldn't see straight. I thought she was you."

"She set it up, Lucia. She knew exactly what time you would walk through that door."

Lucia shook her head, taking a step back.

"No. No, you're making this up to clear your conscience."

"Do you really think I would touch her?" Tomaso asked, his eyes burning with intense conviction.

"Do you really think I would look at anyone else when I had you?"

"The moment you disappeared, I interrogated her."

"She confessed. She was paid by the Rossi family to destroy our alliance."

"To destroy us."

Lucia felt the world spinning.

Five years of running.

Five years of hiding in poverty, raising two children alone in the dark.

All because of a lie?

"Where is she?" Lucia asked, her voice barely audible. "Where is Sofia?"

Tomaso’s expression became terrifyingly blank.

The mask of the mafia boss returned.

"She is no longer a problem. She was banished from Italy. She will never see the light of day again."

Lucia shuddered.

She knew what "banished" meant in his world.

"But right now, that doesn't matter," Tomaso said, stepping closer.

"The Rossis know Sofia failed to kill my spirit back then."

"Now they want to finish the job by killing my sons."

"We have exactly ten minutes before more of them arrive."

"What do you mean?" Lucia asked, panic rising again.

"My men monitored the streets. A convoy of three black SUVs just entered the town."

"They are coming for this building."

"We need to leave. Now."
