Part 6

The private hangar was cold and dark.
A sleek, black Gulfstream jet sat waiting with its engines already humming.
The twins had fallen asleep in the back of the armored car during the high-speed drive.
Tomaso carried Leo in his arms, while his head security guard carried Matteo.
Lucia walked beside them, her mind completely blank from exhaustion and shock.
Tomaso gently laid Leo down on the leather sofa inside the jet.
He covered him with a cashmere blanket, his large hands surprisingly tender.
Lucia watched him from the doorway of the cabin.
It was surreal.
The most feared man in Italy was tucking in a five-year-old boy.
Once the boys were settled, Tomaso turned to face her.
The cabin doors closed, sealing out the world.
The jet began to taxi down the runway.
"Where are you taking us?" Lucia asked, her voice dry.
"Sicily," Tomaso replied.
"My main estate. It is the most fortified place on earth."
"No one can touch you there."
Lucia leaned against the wall, crossing her arms.
"I don't want to go back to Italy, Tomaso. I built a life."
"A life in danger," he corrected her sharply.
"You were working sixteen hours a day translating documents for pennies."
"My sons were wearing shoes that were too tight for them."
"Do you think I didn't notice?"
Lucia felt a sting of shame, but she glared at him.
"We were happy! We were safe until you showed up!"
"You were never safe, Lucia," Tomaso said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
He stepped closer, trapping her against the wall.
The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the faint smell of gunpowder filled her senses.
"The moment you walked away with my blood in your veins, you were a target."
May you like
"I spent five years bleeding for your absence."
"Now that I have you back, I am never letting you go again."
