Chapter 3 - The Silent Partner

Arthur arrived at the motel just as the sun began to paint the sky in shades of bruised purple.

He was a man who looked like he had been hollowed out by grief and unemployment, but his eyes lit up when he saw Evelyn.

She didn't waste time with pleasantries, sliding a folder across the wobbly desk.

Inside were the documents she had spent weeks photographing while the Sterlings were busy with their gala preparations.

Arthur flipped through the pages, his jaw dropping as he realized the magnitude of what she had secured.

"This is enough to send them to prison for decades," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of fear and exhilaration.

Evelyn leaned forward, the bandage on her hand stark against the dark wood of the table.

"I don't want them in prison, Arthur," she said, her voice chillingly calm.

"I want them to be desperate."

"I want them to walk the streets with nothing but the clothes on their backs, just like they wanted for me."

Arthur looked at her, seeing a woman he barely recognized, a woman who had been hardened by the cruelty of the elite.

"They have connections, Evelyn. Judges, police chiefs, senators. They won't go down without a fight."

"Let them fight," she replied, a faint, dangerous smile touching her lips.

"We aren't going to fight them on their terms."

"We are going to make the public do the fighting for us."

They spent the next few hours crafting a narrative, a trail of breadcrumbs that would lead the regulators directly to the Sterling secret accounts.

It wasn't just about the money; it was about the humiliation.

She knew that Victoria cared more about her reputation than her wealth.

If they lost their standing in society, they would lose everything they considered valuable.

The plan was simple, elegant, and absolutely devastating.

Evelyn knew the exact password to the primary server because Victoria had written it on a sticky note in the study months ago.

They would leak the files anonymously, in chunks, so the press would have a daily feed of scandals to digest.

The drip-feed of information would ensure that the Sterlings were constantly on the defensive, never able to get ahead of the narrative.

"Are you sure about this?" Arthur asked, pausing before he left.

"If we do this, there is no going back."

Evelyn looked at her bandaged hand and then at the window, watching the world go by.

"I already haven't been back since yesterday, Arthur."

"The old me died in that dining room."
