Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

Julian found her three days later.
He tracked her to the motel, bursting into the room with a look of frantic desperation.
He looked disheveled, his expensive suit rumpled and his eyes rimmed with red.
"Evelyn, you have to tell them it's not true!" he shouted, grabbing her shoulders.
"You have to tell them it's a hack, a lie, anything!"
Evelyn didn't move; she didn't even flinch.
She looked at him with the same detachment one might have for a stranger on the street.
"Why would I do that, Julian?" she asked, her voice steady and chillingly polite.
"Do you even know what they did to me?"
"They are your family, Evelyn! They are my blood!"
"And you are my husband, yet you stood by and watched them humiliate me every single day," she countered.
"You let them treat me like an animal, like a piece of furniture you bought at an auction."
Julian stepped back, his expression shifting from desperation to confusion.
"I thought you were happy," he muttered.
"I was surviving," she corrected him.
"There is a difference."
He tried to grab her hand, but she pulled it away, the bandaged palm a barrier between them.
"Did they do this?" he asked, his eyes widening as he saw the stitches.
"They did more than this, Julian. They tried to break me."
"But I didn't break. I just got quiet."
"And now, you're going to hear everything I've been holding back."
She pointed toward the door.
"Leave. If you try to stop me, you'll be on the list with them."
Julian stared at her, finally seeing the woman beneath the persona he had created for her.
He saw the strength, the intelligence, and the absolute, unwavering resolve.
He realized, in that moment, that he had never really known her at all.
He left without another word, his shoulders slumped, the weight of his family's sins now resting heavily on his own back.
Evelyn didn't shed a tear; she only picked up her phone and sent the next set of files to the regulators.

This set was even worse than the first, involving money laundering with high-profile criminals.
She was burning the entire house down, and she didn't care who was left inside.
