Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY FRACTURES

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruiser cast eerie,
dancing shadows across the living room walls.
Daniel and Victoria were led out through the front doors in handcuffs,
their heads bowed in deep humiliation.
Chloe watched from the doorway,
wrapping her arms around herself as if shielding herself from the cold realization of human greed.
“I can’t believe it,
” Chloe whispered,
her voice trembling.
“We grew up with them,
we trusted Victoria at family holidays,
we celebrated their anniversaries.
”
“Greed makes monsters out of ordinary people,
Chloe,
” I replied gently,
placing a hand on her shoulder.
Arthur walked slowly back toward the living room,
leaning heavily on his cane.
He looked older,
frailer,
and infinitely more tired than he had an hour ago.
“I invited a viper into my home,
” Arthur said,
his voice cracking with deep sorrow.
“I let her charm me,
I let her alienate me from my true friends,
and I defended her against my own children.
”
“You couldn't have known,
Arthur,
” I said,
pouring him a warm cup of herbal tea.
“Victoria was a master manipulator.
”
“She played the devoted wife in public while running a financial cartel behind closed doors.
”
Richard Sterling walked back into the room,
holding a sleek black tablet in his hand.
“I just spoke with the lead investigator handling the offshore accounts,
” Richard announced.
“It gets even worse.
”
“How much worse could it possibly be,
Richard?” Chloe asked nervously.
“Victoria wasn't just stealing from the architectural partnership,
” Richard explained,
tapping the tablet screen.
“She was also running a fraudulent charity scheme using the Sterling Family Foundation name.
”
“She solicited over half a million dollars from local Boston philanthropists for a fake pediatric cancer research fund.
”
“And funneled every single dime into private Swiss bank accounts.
”
Silence fell over the room once more.
Arthur closed his eyes,
pressing his fingers against the bridge of his nose.
“Fraudulent charity work in my family’s name,
” Arthur murmured bitterly.
“She has destroyed our family legacy in less than three years.
”
“Not your legacy,
Arthur,
” I said firmly,
stepping in front of him.
“A legacy isn't defined by the parasites who latch onto it.
”
“It’s defined by how we clean house when the rot is exposed.
”
Richard looked at me with deep,
professional respect.
“By the way,
” Richard added,
“the deed to this entire estate is registered under your maiden name,
inherited from your grandfather.
”
“Legally speaking,
Victoria and Daniel are trespassers.
”
May you like
“They have thirty seconds before I have the house officially swept and cleared.
