Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS OF A MAID

The holding suite on the ninth floor was comfortable, but it felt like a cage.
Nora Bennett sat on the edge of a leather sofa, holding a warm cup of tea she hadn't touched. Lily was asleep beside her, curled into a tight ball, her bare feet tucked beneath her pale blue dress, her small fingers still clutching the soft ear of her stuffed rabbit.
The door heavy lock clicked, and Julian walked in.
He moved with the deliberate, silent stride of a predator. He didn't look at the luxury furnishings or the security screens displaying the hospital perimeter. His eyes locked onto Nora, burning through her fragile composure.
"Mr. DeLuca..." Nora began, her voice trembling as she stood, instinctively stepping between him and her sleeping child. "How is Miss Vale?"
"She is alive. Barely," Julian said, stopping three feet away. "The doctors say the flute contained aconite. A poison meant for me."
Nora gasped, pressing her hand against her collarbone. "My God..."
"Don't pray in front of me, Nora," Julian said softly, stepping closer. "Because right now, you are the only person in this hospital who holds the key to a puzzle that started four years ago."
He reached out, his long fingers gently lifting Lily’s small left hand, inspecting her tiny wrist, then looking up into Nora’s terrified eyes.
"Where did she learn that turn?" Julian demanded. "The bluebird turn. Claire Arden created it in a two-room apartment on 14th Street when she was twenty-two years old. She never performed it on a stage. She never put it on the internet. Only three people in the world ever saw her dance it: me, her mother... and her roommate."
Nora’s breath hitched. Tears welled in her dark eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks.
"You were Claire’s roommate," Julian stated, the realization falling like a heavy stone. "Nora Vance. You changed your last name to Bennett."
"I had to," Nora sobbed quietly, dropping to her knees right there on the carpet, looking up at him in desperate pleading. "Julian... please. If you ever loved Claire, if there is any piece of your soul that isn't made of iron and blood, listen to me!"
Julian stared down at her, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. "Claire died in a car crash four years ago. Her car went into the river near the docks. The police found her coat..."
"Claire didn't die in a car crash!" Nora whispered, her voice cracked with four years of buried agony. "She was forced into that river! She swam out, Julian! She crawled to my apartment in the middle of a November blizzard, bleeding, her lungs full of water, holding a newborn baby wrapped in her coat!"
Julian froze. The world around him seemed to stop spinning. The hum of the hospital, the wind against the glass, the soft breathing of the child—everything vanished into a blinding white void.
"A... baby?" Julian rasped, his voice breaking for the first time in his adult life.
Nora pointed a trembling finger toward the couch where four-year-old Lily lay sleeping.
"Claire gave birth to her in secret at a private clinic in Indiana because she was terrified of your family," Nora wept. "She named her Lily. She lived for three days in my apartment, bleeding internally from the accident, refusing to go to a hospital because she said if the DeLuca family found out about the baby, they would take her away or kill her to protect your reputation!"
Julian staggered back, knocking over a small mahogany side table. His hands shook uncontrollably as he looked at the child sleeping on the sofa—the dark curls, the delicate arch of her nose, the fearless, joyful posture that had captured an entire ballroom of ruthless billionaires hours earlier.

"She’s... mine?" Julian choked out, dropping to his knees beside the sofa, his massive hand hovering inches over Lily’s small shoulder, afraid to touch her as if she were made of spun glass. "She’s Claire’s daughter?"
"She is your daughter, Julian," Nora whispered softly. "Claire died in my arms four years ago. Her last words were: 'Keep Lily away from the DeLucas. The house is poisoned.'"
