Chapter 5 - THE CONTAINER TERMINAL

The rain had turned into a blinding snowstorm by the time Julian’s convoy reached the South Chicago Container Terminal.
Towering metal shipping containers were stacked four stories high along the icy concrete piers, looming like giant steel coffins against the black expanse of Lake Michigan. Cranes groaned in the freezing wind, their red hazard lights blinking through the swirling snow.
Julian stepped out of his armored vehicle alone, wearing a long black coat. In his right hand, he held a silver metallic flash drive—the master encryption key containing access to sixty million dollars in offshore syndicate accounts.
In his left hand, he carried nothing.
He walked past towering stacks of rust-red containers until he reached the open staging yard at Pier 42.
A single overhead spotlight illuminated the center of the pier. Standing beneath it was Thomas Bell, wearing a heavy tweed coat, holding an umbrella over his head with practiced, butler-like precision. Surrounding him were twelve men carrying automatic rifles, led by a tall, scarred man in his sixties—Dominic DeLuca.
"You look tired, nephew," Dominic sneered, stepping forward, a heavy cigar clutched between his teeth. "Thirty years my brother ruled this city, and then he left the empire to a boy who spent four years crying over a dead ballerina."
"Where is she, Thomas?" Julian ignored his uncle completely, keeping his dark eyes locked on the old butler. "Why the aconite tonight? Why not four years ago?"
Thomas lowered his umbrella slightly, his pale blue eyes cold and lifeless.
"Because tonight, you were going to marry Cassandra Vale," Thomas explained calmly, as if discussing the dinner menu. "Cassandra’s father controls the Federal District Court. If you married her, your legal assets would have been permanently shielded from Dominic’s takeover. I couldn't allow that."
"You poisoned a woman who treated you like family!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the steel containers.
"I served the DeLuca family, Julian!" Thomas snapped, his calm mask slipping into pure fanaticism. "Not your emotions! Your father built a kingdom out of blood and discipline! You were destroying it with mercy! First that worthless girl Claire, then your attempts to go legitimate... you were weakening the bloodline!"
"The child is a DeLuca!" Julian roared, stepping forward. "Claire’s baby is my daughter! She carries my blood!"
Thomas’s face paled for a fraction of a second, but his expression quickly hardened into stone. "A child raised by a maid in a basement is a liability. Once we have the drive, Dominic’s men will clean up the hospital suite. The girl and her mother will vanish, just like Claire did."
Julian stopped ten feet away. A cold, terrifying smile slowly spread across his face.
"You really thought I came here alone, Thomas?" Julian asked softly.
Before Dominic could react, high-powered spotlights flooded the container yard from all four sides!
WHRRRR-WHRRR-WHRRR!
Two tactical police helicopters dropped out of the snow clouds, their searchlights pinning Dominic’s men to the frozen concrete!
From behind the shipping containers, dozens of heavily armed Federal Marshals and SWAT officers poured out, rifles raised, tactical lasers painting red dots across the chests of Dominic’s guards!
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Dominic cursed, reaching for his waistline, but a single sniper shot echoed from the crane above—THWACK!—shattering Dominic’s kneecap! He collapsed onto the ice, screaming in agony.
The twelve mercenaries instantly dropped their rifles, raising their hands into the freezing air.
Only Thomas Bell remained standing beneath his umbrella.
He looked at the tactical lasers dancing across his chest, then looked at Julian—the boy he had raised, the young man he had betrayed, and the leader who had finally outmaneuvered him.
"You betrayed the family, Julian," Thomas whispered.
May you like
"No, Thomas," Julian said, stepping up to him and ripping the umbrella from his hand. "I saved it."
Federal agents tackled Thomas to the frozen ground, snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists as Julian turned his back, walking away into the falling snow without looking back once.
