Chapter 6 - THE AWAKENING OF CASSANDRA

Thirty-six hours later.

The morning sun filtered through the double blinds of the private recovery room at Northwestern Memorial.

Cassandra Vale opened her eyes slowly, her vision blurry, her throat feeling as though she had swallowed glass. The steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor assured her she was still among the living.

Sitting in a comfortable chair beside her bed was Julian DeLuca.

He looked exhaustively tired, dark circles under his eyes, but his hands were steady as he poured a glass of fresh water and held the straw to her lips.

"Julian..." Cassandra rasped, her voice a fragile whisper. "What... happened?"

"You were poisoned, Cassandra," Julian said softly, sitting back down. "By Thomas Bell. The aconite was meant for me."

Cassandra closed her eyes, a single tear slipping past her long lashes. "Thomas... the butler? Why?"

"It’s over now," Julian assured her, taking her small hand gently. "Thomas and Dominic are in federal custody. They will spend the rest of their lives in high-security facilities. You are safe."

Cassandra looked at him for a long moment, reading the profound shift in his posture, his eyes, and his aura. The cold, impenetrable armor he had worn for four years had dissolved, replaced by a deep, grounded clarity.

"It wasn't just the poison, was it?" Cassandra asked softly. "The maid’s child... Lily."

Julian hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Lily is my daughter, Cassandra. Claire’s daughter."

Cassandra didn't scream or rage. She simply stared at the ceiling, letting the truth wash over her like a cool wave.

"When she danced..." Cassandra whispered, a faint, genuine smile touching her pale lips. "I saw her soul, Julian. She danced with a freedom I spent thirty years trying to buy with sweat and pain. She belongs in the light."

"Cassandra, I am so sorry—"

"Don't apologize," Cassandra interrupted gently, turning her head to look at him. "You were never truly mine, Julian. You were holding onto a ghost, and I was holding onto a trophy. We would have made each other miserable within a year."

She squeezed his hand weakly.

"Go be a father, Julian," Cassandra said, her voice full of unexpected grace. "And make sure that little girl gets her million-dollar trust. I expect interest."

Julian smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in four years. "It’s already being processed."
