Chapter 5 - THE MEETING OF ENEMIES

The boardroom was silent,
lit by the soft,
ambiguous light of the late afternoon.
Richard and Victoria sat at the long table,
their posture stiff and anxious.
They were waiting for the new benefactor to arrive,
their future hanging in the balance.
The door opened,
and a woman stepped in.
She was dressed in a powerful,
midnight blue suit,
her hair styled perfectly,
her face set in an expression of cool,
detached confidence.
Richard gasped.
Victoria stood up,
her mouth agape.
Elena?
Richard stammered,
unable to believe his eyes.
Elena walked to the head of the table,
her footsteps echoing in the quiet room.
She didn't smile.
She didn't offer a greeting.
She simply sat down,
placing her hands on the table.
Welcome,
she said,
her voice calm and steady.
I believe we have business to discuss.
Victoria looked at her son,
her eyes filled with disbelief.
What is the meaning of this?
she demanded,
turning back to Elena.
You have no right to be here.
You are nothing!
Elena looked at Victoria,
her gaze unblinking and icy.
I am the one holding your debt,
Victoria,
she said,
her tone devoid of emotion.
I am the one who has the power to destroy your company,
or to save it.
And currently,
I am leaning toward the former.
Richard looked at Elena,
his eyes searching her face for the woman he had once known.
Elena,
please,
he whispered.
We can talk about this.
We can fix this.
Elena laughed,
a short,
hollow sound that held no humor.
Fix this?
she repeated.
You think you can fix this?
You,
who stood by while your mother humiliated me?
You,
who watched as I bled on your floor?
She leaned forward,
her eyes locking with his.
There is nothing to fix,
Richard.
There is only the consequence of your actions.
She opened the folder in front of her,
sliding a document across the table.
This is a contract,
she said.
It details the terms of your bailout.
It requires you to sign over majority control of the Vance Group to my holding company.
Victoria shrieked.
Never!
We will never sign away our legacy!
Elena shrugged,
picking up her pen.
Then you can watch it burn,
she said coolly.
The choice is yours.
You can save your pride,
or you can save your company.
But you cannot have both.
Richard looked at the document,
his hands shaking.
He looked at his mother,
who was trembling with rage.
He knew the truth.
The company was their life.
If it failed,
May you like
they would be left with nothing.
He reached for the pen.
