Chapter 8 - THE CONFRONTATION

Beatrice,
the sister-in-law who had once poured hot gravy on Elena’s chest,
was now living in a small,
cramped apartment on the outskirts of the city.
She had been cut off from the family fortune,
her husband having left her when the money dried up.
She was bitter,
angry,
and desperate.
She blamed Elena for everything,
refusing to acknowledge her own role in their downfall.
She decided to confront Elena,
to demand an explanation,
to make her pay for what she had done to their family.
She tracked Elena down,
waiting outside her office building for hours.
When Elena finally exited,
surrounded by security,
Beatrice rushed forward.
You witch!
she screamed,
lunging toward her.
You destroyed us!
Elena stopped,
her security detail stepping between them.
She looked at Beatrice,
seeing the desperation and the hatred in her eyes.
I didn't destroy you,
Beatrice,
Elena said,
her voice calm and steady.
You destroyed yourselves.
I simply held up a mirror to your own actions.
Beatrice snarled,
trying to push past the security guards.
You are a liar!
You stole our company!
You stole our lives!
Elena sighed,
a look of pity crossing her face.
You never had a life,
Beatrice,
she said softly.
You only had a performance.
And now the curtain has fallen.
She turned to her security chief.
Escort her off the property,
she instructed.
And ensure she doesn't return.
Beatrice was dragged away,
screaming obscenities that were lost in the noise of the city traffic.
Elena watched her go,
feeling no anger,
no satisfaction,
only a sense of closure.
The drama,
the hate,
the resentment,
it was all so small compared to what she had built.
She had moved on.
She had grown.
She had transcended the pettiness of the Vances.
She climbed into her car,
taking a deep breath.
She realized that she had been holding onto the anger for so long that she had forgotten how to just be herself.
It was time to let it go.
It was time to leave the past where it belonged,
behind her.
She drove away,
leaving the scene behind.
She was moving toward a future that she had created,
a future where she was in control.
She felt a sense of peace settling over her,
May you like
a lightness that she hadn't felt in years.
She was finally free.
