Chapter 6 - THE POWER SHIFT

Richard’s hand hovered over the paper.
He looked at Elena,
hoping for a shred of empathy,
a glimmer of the woman he had loved.
But all he saw was a wall of resolve.
He signed his name,
his signature shaky and uneven.
Victoria gasped,
collapsing into her chair.
You coward!
she hissed at her son.
You just gave away everything!
Elena took the paper,
reviewing the signature with a practiced eye.
Effective immediately,
the Vance Group is under new management,
she stated.
She stood up,
ready to leave.
What does this mean for us?
Richard asked,
his voice barely a whisper.
Are we fired?
Elena paused at the door,
turning back to look at them.
You will stay on as consultants,
she said,
a hint of a cruel smile on her lips.
You will report to my assistant,
and you will follow every instruction to the letter.
If you refuse,
your severance will be voided,
and you will be sued for every penny you have left.
She walked out of the room,
leaving them in a state of shock.
She had done it.
She had taken their power,
their wealth,
and their future.
She walked down the hallway,
the silence of the office building feeling like a victory march.
She had been the servant,
the charity case,
the embarrassment.
Now,
she was the master.
She returned to her office,
her heart light and free.
She sat at her desk,
looking at the skyline.
She had done what she set out to do.
She had avenged herself.
But she wasn't finished yet.
She knew that the Vances wouldn't give up so easily.
They would try to fight,
to manipulate,
to crawl their way back.
She would be waiting for them.
She would be ready for every trick they had,
every scheme they could dream up.
She had learned from the best,
after all.
She had learned from them.
And she was better than them.
She picked up the phone,
calling Marcus.
Start the audit on the Vance family’s personal accounts,
she ordered.
I want to know where every single cent has gone for the last ten years.
Yes,
ma’am,
Marcus replied.
Everything will be uncovered.
Elena hung up,
her mind racing with plans.
She was going to dismantle them,
piece by piece,
until there was nothing left of the Vances but a memory.
May you like
It was time to pay them back in full.
The game was just beginning.
