Chapter 4 - The Mistress in Borrowed Silk

Sloane Mercer had always wanted to be Vivian Whitaker,
admiring her style,
her wealth,
and the effortless grace with which she moved through high society.
Sloane had grown up in a small town,
dreaming of mansions and expensive horses,
and she had decided early on that she would do whatever it took to get them.
When she met Preston,
she saw her ticket to the top,
a man who was already inside the gates of the elite but wanted more.
She had targeted him,
flattering his ego,
and telling him he was far too brilliant to be overshadowed by his wife.
Preston,
starving for validation,
had fallen into her trap immediately,
believing Sloane was the only one who truly appreciated his genius.
They had started their affair in expensive hotel rooms,
paid for with Vivian’s credit cards,
and had quickly graduated to planning a future together.
Sloane had insisted on wearing Vivian’s clothes,
using her perfume,
and even demanding that Preston give her the pale ivory hat for the Derby.
She wanted to feel what it was like to be a Whitaker,
to sit in the historic box,
and to have the cameras capture her beauty.
Preston,
eager to please his new queen,
had stolen the hat from Vivian’s closet,
believing his wife would never notice.
He had sent the text message to Vivian as a final,
spiteful act of defiance,
hoping to break her spirit once and for all.
But as Sloane walked down the concrete steps of Churchill Downs,
her high heels clicking loudly against the stone,
she felt only terror.
The security guards escorted them through the VIP pavilion,
where dozens of wealthy acquaintances turned to stare,
whispering behind their hands.
Sloane tried to cover her face with the wide brim of the ivory hat,
but the wind caught it,
revealing her flushed,
humiliated expression to the onlookers.
Preston was furious,
his face red with anger,
as he tried to argue with the guards.
Do you know who I am,
he demanded,
his voice rising above the chatter of the crowd,
I am Preston Caldwell,
the managing director of the Whitaker Trust.
The lead security officer didn't even look at him,
simply pointing toward the exit gates,
and making it clear that his title meant nothing today.
Sloane looked at Preston,
hoping to see the powerful,
confident man she had fallen for,
but instead,
she saw a desperate,
weak little boy.
She realized,
with a sudden and chilling certainty,
that they had made a terrible mistake,
and that Vivian Whitaker was not the weak woman they had believed her to be.
The pale ivory hat,
once a symbol of her triumph,
May you like
now felt like a heavy crown of thorns,
marking her as a thief in front of the entire world.
